Speaking of broodies...my Betty hen is broody again. Oh vey! LOL She's a broody champ!

hooray for broodies! i've just ordered a batch of birchen marans and SFH eggs for my latest broody girl... in the meantime, Eleanor is doing a great job with her two chicks, and i've got a watch on broody #2's nest for any sign of pipping or peeping...

(and it's the last week of classes at school, AND one of my departmental colleagues unexpectedly has decided to retire NOW, and everything's chaos. it's such a welcome relief to home each afternoon to the relatively simplicity of ChickenLandia!)

Oz says use the penny the whole time. I do not know what would happen if you put vinegar in.

The penny will kill the mold but I doubt it will stop the smell at hatch.

The Cl x CPs are very nice chickens. If Alis is one, I think it is a cockerel.

I hope I am wrong!
will be a handsome lad at least

I have a hatching update! My oldest daughter went in on her lunch break to check for me and we have one black Silkie safely hatched and another egg is rocking! I will be able to go and see for myself in the morning. I can hardly contain my excitement!

On other good news, I came home to check for eggs and had four of four in the nest box. Luckily my oldest son was with me and spotted this tiny egg amongst the straw in the run. I have three young pullets that have yet to lay, an eight month Silkie, a 21-24 week old SFH, and a 25 week old bantam Polish. Wonder who is my big girl today...

For size and color comparison, I have put the tiny egg next to a large white egg (from my BL) and a XL brown egg (my NH).

ETA: I have yet to have my Silkie squat for me, but she is getting up there in weeks. My daughter swears that my Polish has been squatting, but I haven't witnessed it myself. I HAVE witnessed my SFH squat. Could her egg be this small?
Wow such pretty eggs! EHHHH! I can't wait to see pics of the hatchlings!

I'm trying a penny in each well. I noticed after the last hatch there was fuzz on the water. I only put them in when I locked down the eggs this afternoon. Don't know if it will make that much difference but we'll see.

Just wanted to share a few pics of my top hen Precious and her 3 babies that hatched from Langshan/Langshan mix eggs from the farm. She is such a good mommy! She had them out in the yard when they were only 2 days old. One of the chicks has pasty butt so I've been cleaning her vent. It makes Precious nervous to hear the chick screaming but she calms down as soon as I've finished. I guess I just assumed that broody raised chicks wouldn't have that problem. I do know that she is getting them to eat all kinds of things like mulberries.

This little chick is very outgoing and was one of the first of the three to come out from under mama.

He/she was going after Precious's eye while I was taking pics. You can see him pulling on her eyelid in this pic.

The fluffy butt gang!
Great pictures and precious is one lovely girl!

Thank you zoo! I'll be bringing them home with me, so I should get some opportunities!

If I open my clear eggs (my shipped eggs that are on day 12) will I be able to tell if they were ever fertile in the first place? Chicken Pics----- My favorite little EE My 10 week old Cornish X (He is over 10 pounds!!) My little Salmon Favorolle Roo. Poor thing is so funny looking. (If anyone wants him, they can have him -- I can't have roos' :/ )
I've tried to see too but whenever I've cracked one open the yolk and white just run together and the yolk isn't standing anymore it's just liquid eeww

I am sooooo far away from eggs! I have been on store eggs for 2 years now. Blah!

BLECH!!!! you will be overrun with good eggs in about 6 mos!

Got news for ya! The Mini won't be big enough!

I am thinking that I will only beak out an incubator if a broody gives up mid hatch so hopefully it will be... I am not cut out to hatch

I am really lucky any made it considering the temperature issues, but just seeing that fully formed chick was a bummer. I feel ya sistah

Took some more pictures of the Pita Pintas and Basques today!

I'm so in love! Now, if they'd just stay still at the same time I could get some good shots!
Beautiful! I don't want to offend but the PPs remind me of Javas...on my dream flock list.
When you reach your hand into a bin of chicks, they scatter unless you have handled them constantly. When you reach your hand into a bin of goslings, they come running to you and nibble at your fingers. (I know I shouldn't let them do that, cute when they're a week old, probably less cute when they weigh 20 pounds

)

We were lying on the rug with them, they all came up and laid down next to me, snuggled up against my body. Literally, I've had them 5 days and they are totally attached. I am Mommy! When I walk around the living room, they follow me everywhere, so funny and endearing.

Sooooo sweet My turkeys were like that I could go out and call them and they would come running from wherever they were...not for treats like the hens but for loooove.

Is she a Langshan?? very similar looking to an AL but smaller comb and waddles. Such sweet pics
They won't go crazy cooped up in the coop for that long? We have nine of them in a 4x4 coop.
I had to release mine from the coop early because it was HOT and they were stressing but this time of year it should be fine.
THIS is why I love geese. Seriously. If they laid like ducks- it's all I would have. And I mean that! They really bond if you let them!

What breed is Betty??

So my little orthopedic patient has shown great improvement. I think things will only continue to improve.

before the hobble and shoe she would flop helplessly over on her side and not be able to get herself upright. But now she has backward and occasional forward movement and she can right herself when she flops. The girl...or boy... has heart.

I have been able to rehome a bunch of hatchery chicks already. It is a good model for my husband because he can see that pullets are easy to rehome and we can raise and process cockerels. I think it will help him understand that even with broodies hatching we won't be overrun.

That is an that was an infertile! A fertile egg would have something in it.
Clear eggs=not fertile.

Blood rings are usually a fertile egg that had bacteria in it.
