Sometimes I feel l am in a chicken soap opera.....LOL Thankfully there are no men in my flock to fght over.
So, here are the days of our lives:
2 weeks ago we picked up 2 Marans from Chiquita(6 weeks old ) to add to our flock. Since Olive (Australorp 16 weeks) was being picked on we thought it would help her to infiltrate the flock. In the mean tme, Olive has done fine and worked into the flock perfectly.
The Marans (no name yet, as the plan is to only keep one) have been kept in a small pen attached to the main pen, so everyone can get acquainted, until we add them in another week or so.
However.......our little BO, Betty (we think 10-12 weeks old), is now being picked on horribly. The others have actually drawn blood, and are keeping her away from the food. We pulled Betty out and doctored her up and have been keeping her away from the rest of the flock. We tried to introduce her,to the Marans but they both chased her off as well....those little guys are spunky and will have no problem protecting themselves when the time comes!
We have checked her over several times, thinking something might be wrong with her, but can't find any indication of sickness. She seems perfectly healthy and is eating fine.
Last night, we tried some one on one time with her, and each of the Marans in turn. The slightly larger one (who I had hoped to keep, as she has blacker coloring) seems to be the aggressor. The smaller one, is not as bad....but will chase Betty from treats.
So how do I get peace in my flock? Betty has really taken to my husband (and him to her), so we are hoping we don't have to find her a more peaceful home, but we will do what is in her best interest.
This concludes today's episode
