Seriously the guy hasn't had a free weekend in Lord knows how long and he is out there this weekend indulging me by building me a 4x7 coop that will be tall enough for my new Icelandics to roost happily and big enough to sleep oodles of new littles.

Oh and it is our 23rd wedding anniversary today...silver plated. But I think a better gift would have feathers don't you?

Laura I am sorry that you may have to give up on those eggs.

I think it's a great idea to get some chicks to go under her.

Hatchery behemoths are flying around the brooder and up to the top of the waterer. Time to get a lid on it. Compared to my hatched chicks these little girls are so big and beefy. It is hard to believe they are only three days older.

In your experience does chick size convert to adult size?

We are loaded with projects right now, so we are not starting any new ones.

I spent yesterday weeding the garden beds. DH weed whacked around the garden beds to get rid of the 5 foot tall weeds! Today, I'm going to try to put some compost bins together out of fencing today. Need to find a better way to compost somehow. What I'm doing isn't working. I can't get compost at all in the ComposTumbler, so I gave up and have been doing a pile on the ground.
I just have a area in the yard ( Us country folk can do that )

I put a layer of pine needles down on the ground a few inches thick and pile everything on that. Get a good pitch or hay fork and turn and water from time to time.
You can also use pallets and build a three sided frame. They work good for a few years and are cheap to make. gets the air flowing

you can add a stump remover product to help break it down faster as well.

Our compost tumbler is crap! It compacts too much. I tumble stuff for a week or so then dump it in big pile. I'm glad other people can't use theirs too I feel better!!

I have oodles of chicks hatching this weekend. Laura you need turkeys!! 3 showgirls so far color me excited!

One did not finish absorbing the yolk and got completely cemented. I had to wash her in warm water and pop her back in the bator to dry off. She is sleeping now like a little nekkid angle.

I compost in an old plastic kiddie pool. It seems to work well, but it get really smelly sometimes. The chickens love to scratch around in it though.

Congratulations on the hatching! I usually only wash them enough to get stuck membranes off the first time.

I candled today--It is way to early for the Horstman and second Basque hatch--It's only been two days for those.

I had one clear on the first Basque hatch so there are 16 of those. The SG Dorkings had 6 clears. 4 were from hen P6 and 2 were from hen W26. All of the Dells are going and it looks like 8 of the Black Penedesencas are developing. I had to pull a couple of Crele Penedesenca eggs.

The first Hatch will be Sunday! and then three more to go after that.

I want a greenhouse.  Mostly so I can stick a Meyer Lemon bush in it in the winter.

Near where I live, there is a new community farm.  I've been watching them plant.  (and they just got chickens too)  They do have 1 greenhouse of plastic tarplike material.  But what really interests me is they have a hoop structure with plastic across the top and about 1/2 down the sides.  On the ends it's staked to the ground like a tent would be.  I went by one night near dusk and noticed that they bring the plastic to the ground at night.  Then tie it back up during the day.

Oh my gosh! I was thinking the same thing about getting a greenhouse for my Meyer Lemon. I have had one in a pot for 2-3 years. Bring it in the house when it gets below freezing. Alas, it is not a happy camper like this. Has set fruit for the last two years, and then drops it before it gets big. However, if I built a greenhouse for it, I would have to heat it on most cold winter nights. Too cold, otherwise.

A local organic farm has one of those hoop houses. They actually got a grant from the local RCD that partially paid for it. They can grow year-round in it, but they have to put hoops with more plastic over their individual rows in the winter, otherwise everything freezes.
