Wow, congratulations on getting the ones you really wanted - two Khaki Quail d'Anvers!
I wonder about the flax needing to be ground though. Chicken gizzards are really good at grinding up stuff - they eat lots of rocks. The rooster I processed awhile ago had his gizzard stuffed with sharp quartz rocks - and I seriously doubt anything would get thru there without a good grinding. Most of the scratch needs grinding too before digesting and it gets it. I haven't seen anything go thru and out the other end that is recognizable as something that went in... not that I am actively searching for it..
Also, I have put whole flax in a cup of water (unground) and it released the flax gell - so I think it can partially dissolve too?
Quote: BOSS is also very high in fat. Not only do the eggs get bigger - but they store the fat around their vent - making it hard for the egg to get out past all that fat.

Awesome! Thanks.
No worries, I would have them stick by me. I'm not even sure I'll let my adult birds free range without me out there, just because we have so many hawks!
You want coturnix quail. The eggs will not be huge. James Marie eggs were 2/3 bigger then the regular jumbo egg, and that was the size of a serama egg. But if you are trying to sell them they will not fit in a standard quail carton.
For what you want you should go for jumbo or xxl . If you intend to breed they should not be over 17 oz live or you will be fussing with their feet. This is assuming you are eating them. If you are not, go for quail that are a little smaller the feed to egg ratio is much better.
So it comes down to you want cots. But tell me your plan an I'll tell you what kind of cots.
Oh I did read people were keeping quails and doves together. I don't remember who asked that. And I'm not sure how it would work with intros. But it looks like it is not disease dangerous for either bird.
I'm thinking of selling the eggs more than anything else, although the empty incubator is calling.
I had asked about housing quail and doves/pigeons together. I was hoping the quail could have the ground level and the doves/pigeions having the upper. She hasn't desided on the variety she wants yet. I'm thinking of building more of a flight aviary than a coop/loft, probably 12'x6'x6' in size.
OK, tell me about the orangeville small animal sale. Is it worth taking roostes? Do they have meat rabbits? Is it worth taking fancy stock ( i have a pair of mille fleur leghorns, and im not enamored with them)what about fancy chicks? I could bring a broodies with chicks and she could be my heat lamp but i don't know if people are chick people. I don't have any outside ready pullets so if that is the main thing that sells I might wait. Who all will be there?
I've gone twice. Last time I took a rooster & cockerels and did not sell any. They all seemed to be people from town.
They recommended that I advertise on CL the week before so that people who are looking for what I have might come to the swap.
They had rabbits. I don't remember what kind, just the cute one that Ron's DD got.
My birds are kind of in between... better than hatchery but not good enough for showing. People were raving about how big my rooster was... so that sort of made me think that those people on that day were townies used to hatchery birds. No one knew what Ron's Breese were.
That's why we need to advertise before going.
I may go with roosters & cockerels. Next month I'll bring lambs, since I had a request. It's kind of fun to go and talk to people.

A woman my friend and I spoke with in Roseville on this Sunday past suggested there are a lot of 4- H participants. Otehr than that I don't know. It may be better for shoppers than sellers.
There is a FaceBook Page for them but it doesn't say much. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Orangevale-Small-Animal-Exchange/353524498055853
Seriously it is framed is about all. I have to move it to it's permanent spot and then put the sides on. It is only 4x8, so hopefully I kept it simple enough so there are no major issues but we will see. The frame is in my garage and too heavy for me to move by myself and everyone was busy this last weekend, including me.
This next weekend I have to go to So Cal to see my mom so I am really running out of time.

It is a small affair and most people do not know about the exotic and rare breeds. There was a person there last Fall that wanted Roosters but he did not want to pay much for them. There is also a Rooster Rescue there--you drop off the Roos but do not get money for them.
I am going but will have brochures and will try putting up some CL adds tomorrow. The Broodie is a good idea. Chicks would probably sell well but most buyers seem to want laying hens. It is fun but a long way from San Jose. Something like it in your area would probably get more people that know the fancy breeds and are willing to buy them.
They kept calling the Bresse White Leghorns or White EEs...
