Hi guys!!! It's been crazy here. My grampa passed away yesterday; 1 month to the day of his wife's funeral I've been a bit preoccupied... I've missed you all!!!
My dilemma: My boys are now talking about how they are boys!!! AAAHHH Anybody need any roos that were hatched in February? I'm trying to hang on to a Silkie roo, but I have 2 that haven't started crowing, but their brother has... I have 3 EE/Brahmas. Anybody?

You know, it doesn't seem that odd to me to be walking around with a chicken. I mean I personally don't do it..... but hey it isn't that odd!

Good thing that lady didn't stop me to ask if that was a bird, because my snarky reply today would have been, "is that your FACE??!?!?" I am a little cranky today.

LOL! I just said, "It's a chicken..." and kept walking. Her full sentence was something like... "Is that a bird! There's like legs hanging down!"

A few questions:

1) Do chickens normally eat their own or their coop-mate's feathers? Mine have been.

2) When do roos start to crow? Mine are around 8 1/2 weeks old.

3) Do some chickens like a little light in the coop to see at night? The flocks first few nights in the coop were on the chilly side so at dusk we turned on the light to lure them in and left it on. Now they don't really go in until we turn it on (it's not a heat lamp anymore but like a 60 watt light bulb) and then turn it off after they climb onto their roosts.

Are they on the ground or off the chicken? feather picking ON a chicken is bad. Mine will eat discarded feathers, but don't eat a ton. If they are picking them off each other they need more space and or more protien.

They are a Spanish breed that are super friendly and hardy. And super rare (if you are into that! ) They lay A LOT of whitish/light brown eggs. They are related to Basques and are even friendlier than them. I'll PM you the price. Here's a pic of the girls and boys and also the chicks. Silly chickens...They have been trained to go in when the light comes on! They do not need the light at night--unless you want them to lay eggs all winter long.

Cockerels start crowing any time, usually when you do not want them to. Mine usually start by 10 weeks or so but some take longer. A person on the HRIR thread(Heritage Rhode Island Red) said his did not start until several weeks after starting to mate the pullets--older than 20 weeks. Happy Chooks had one crow at 1 day old....

Chickens eat lots of things. Feathers at your place must be delicious....I have seen mine eating feathers.

In my very mixed flock of poultry, I have two Toulouse geese. It took me over a year to figure out they were both ganders. In the summer of 2011 as I was moving here, I ordered a sexed pair from Ideal Poultry. I named them Kate and William. One died after I removed the leg bands and I thought it was the male. It was too late to order a replacement, so I found a slightly older gosling on CraigsList; the people told me it was male. He became Angus. Well, Kate never laid any eggs. "She" is very duck-centric and hangs out with my Cayuga ducks. Angus, on the other hand, hangs out mostly with the chickens. Both of them display Gander/Daddy behavior with baby ducks and chicks. They also started to fight this Spring. Nothing major, just "I am the Boss of You" stuff. Given their single Dad status, I figured I should try to get some girl geese for 'em. All the hatcheries were out of Toulouse by the time I got around to it - in two cases, by one day. Auugh! But Ideal Poultry has a "notify me" feature which I used, and I got a call the next day saying they expected a late hatch but not enough to post on their website. Hatch date May 29. Yay! I have been counting the days... Ideal called me a bit over an hour ago to ask if I minded changing from May 29 to "Today or maybe tomorrow, depending on when we can ship them." Three guesses as to my reply. e P.S. I ordered three female goslings, so each gander has the chance for a partner and one extra "just in case."

 We have a sod farm about 1/2 mile from us.  I wish I could just roll out new grass for them, but since I don't know what chemicals they use on it I haven't.

We have two OEGB mixes and at least one BBS orp bantam chicks that hatched out so far.  I'll mess with her agai this morning and I hope to find a partr.rock bantam under her.

The best news as far as DH is concerned, re-homed the 4 month old BLRW boy.  Back down to only 5 guys crowing.

What a great idea! I need sod for my young ones. I wonder if Home Depot sod is dangerous?
