California - Northern

I think UB has a marans dad. I have a baby that is a flame marans chick.he can sneak around and hold on with the best of them!

Meg you are in my chicken hero list too!!

Yes they are! They are from the Asturias region in Spain (where it is cold and snowy). My Basques are hardy but they got nothing on PPs!

I'm 7/10! July birthday people are awesome!! :-)

Very cool. They are striking! Not sure how well they lay or how much feed they go through... But I somehow managed to secure a promise of two breeding pens built this summer in addition to my existing layers coop! YES!!!!!

With that:

Deb- would you be offended if I ask you to pm me a photo of your pens. I noticed them in an earlier post and can't find it to show dh... I will promise to collect a few Roos to try out here from your flock as a thank you;-))))))

EEs\OEs and Marans are easily sold locally as chicks. The others may be harder because they are rare and many do not know what they are.

Pick the ones that interest you the most. Are you going to work on improving them?

There is always a new hot thing with chickens....It is very hard to make money when one is on the bleeding edge. Often times a bloody nose is what you get.

Penedesencas are great if you can get the hatching eggs locally. They would be better shipped as day old chicks.

When you get them though, they are great layers of Large Dark shelled eggs with great feed conversion. It is amazing that a hen that small can lay such a large egg.

I hatched 7 chicks from 24 shipped eggs....They did not cost $20.00 per egg. The Black Penes cost me $30.00 for 12 including shipping. The Our Fly Babies cost me something similar and I hatched 5 of them.

One Wheaten and 4 Partridge Penedesencas:

I love the empordanesa most, they are the mildest and easiest to contain. Crele are nice because they are auto sexing and milder than partridge , black or wheaten
Poop, I did not get my quotes!

Penns are awesome chickens to have, that is clear. I am impressed by the work our community is doing on them and hope they make a comeback. But I can imagine I wold go crazy trying to sell the eggs that are so hard to hatch. Heck, I already DO, lol. If you have the passion Jason has for his penns and emps, it is worth it. One of the things I LOVE about this group is the passion some people have for these diverse breeds. I especialy think it is cool the work you are doing to help people hatch some of these eggs so they can improve stuff Ron! Also, I look at what these Marans eat and I cry. SO I am doubly envious.
awhh Thanks they are a special breed and are so perfect for our hot climate
What color would you suggest Ron? I like the Penedesencas. And it gets hot here!! What color/variation do people like?
crele are the easiest to sell. I am getting requests almost daily. Though if I ever sell chicks it will be in pairs only
I didn't think Penedesenca were recognized at all by the APA. Have they recently been added to the Standard?
I wish, we are going to work hard to make that happen. Partridge will be easiest as more people seem to keep them. My poor white empordanesa have along way to go.
Found this post while looking up pita pintas on google... I'm 7/31... Nice to know I'm in good company:-)
So the question, are they ok in the snow?
I would say they will work . My penedesenca managed our winters fine though it is not as cold. we do get snow though. I would think Pita Pintas would at least be as cold tolerent
I loves me some showgirls.

Do any of you have opinions on Buckeyes? I've been offered some eggs to hatch but don't see them mentioned much.

Looks like the little partridge rock bantam is going to make it, took some extra care but it's now all fluffed up under Mom. 2 mixes, 1 black and 1 blue orp bantam, and the little rock.

Checking out the orp.

All kidding aside. There is a wide range of chicken keepers here with a wide range of goals for their flock. BYC offers the diversity of people to interact and learn from each other. What an opportunity for someone who has a small flock of feed store chicks, who can have a rooster, to learn from all the info here and somehow apply it to their "podunk" flock. Maybe be inspired to get involved in a rare breed or maybe just have some chicks for the kids to enjoy.

How lucky are we all to have this forum?

I used to have Buckeyes. Very outgoing, good foragers, hardy. I started out with hatchery stock and they didn't lay as much as I wanted, so I swapped them out for Delawares.
