What does everyone use for their roost? I am using a poop board but I am not certain what to use for a roost.......?

I use 2X4s. Large fowl need the4" side to roost on--Heavy chickens should not have to hold on by their claws all night long.

Regular triple antibiotic ointment and some strechy vet wrap works well too. Bumble foot can be caused by lots of things like thorns, broken glass, slivers, bruising from heavy birds jumping down from roosts etc. I had problems when I has a wire floor in half of my coop. I switched to a solid wood floor with deep bedding and rarely have problems with bumble foot. I did have one roo get it from thorns last year digging in the rose prunings/trimmings in the burn pile.

Good explanation

The only birds to get bumble foot have been my BLRWs. They get fat easily and I am sure the bumble foot is caused by them jumping down from their roost and hitting the floor hard.

threw away the receipt already (i bought the bag a few weeks ago, just noticed now that it's the wrong thing), and am feeling too sheepish to take it back without one... and wondered if there's any chicken-use for it?

Darn quotes aren't working right this morning

Anyway, how big are the pellets? If the pellets are small, I'd just throw some out on the ground for them as treats. I include rabbit pellets in my treat mix for my birds.

If the pellets are big, the big horse size extruded pellets, I'd take some in a bucket, pour a little warm water over them to make a thick mash. Then try putting some out for the birds. You might need to put something on top they recognize so they'll give it a try. A little as a treat would be fine for them and it won't go to waste. They naturally eat greens & grain, the primary component of the pellets.

If they still won't eat it, then I'd give it away. It's illegal here to purposely feed the deer (attract predators) or you could put it out for them. Personally, I don't try to encourage them, it's already a constant war for my garden and landscaping.

It was nice meeting you. I still can't believe you drove all the way from San Jose for two chicks and to peel quail eggs at my kitchen sink!

I mean I do have awesome birds and all, but still

Not that I haven't driven that far to get something I wanted................

DH wanted to drive to Oregon to get babies to save them the trip with the USPS.

Only adult laying hens and three roosters per breed are counted. Chicks are not counted, pullets are not counted, extra roosters of any age are not counted, hatching eggs are not counted (never count your eggs before they hatch)... When you get hatching eggs shipped only half will hatch - and half of those will be roosters, so plan on that when getting eggs (i.e. if you want 10 hens get 40 eggs). The bigger the incubator, the easier it is to fill it up. The smaller incubators are always too small....

I had one of the Empordanesa chicks just hatched and I have 3 others with pips. The wait is killing me!! Will I be able to tell them apart after they hatch?
awsome. empordanesa hatch yellow. crele penedesenca hatch grey as boys and brown with girls . occasionally boys are brown to but have grey on the shoulders
So I have never really had roosters at all before and since I hatched my own this time, I have at LEAST half of the 26 are roosters.

I am getting closer and closer to getting the coop done so I can move them outside. They are 4 weeks old this weekend.

It is normal for the roosters to start fighting already? I have one really big Barnvelder (I think that is what he is) and he was pecking everyone in the head. One of the Wheaten Ameraucana actually stood up to him a bit and they went at it.

I took him out of the group and put him in a pet kennel to see if things calmed down. He didn't peck at me when I picked him up but I didn't trust him not to the way he was picking on everyone.

Is that normal behavior at this age?
they are probably trying to determine the pecking order and there are still a few that are dominant trying to work it out.

yes 2x4

I tried feeding the deer when we first moved to our property. They wouldn't eat pellets or baled alfalfa. All they wanted was COB with molasses.

Your chickens may think it's great, mines sure love it when I give them alfalfa in the winter since there isn't much else green around here.

I'm a little worried about my resident doe. She usually drops her fawns about Mother's day, so far, no babies and she is still allowing the twins from last year to hang close. We have at least 6' fencing, most is 7' to keep them out of our portion of the property. We have 4' around the back property line just in case the dogs get in the back, we had to cut a wire in a few trail spots. Fawns sound so stressed when mom jumps the fence and they are on the wrong side. In the past, we have had coyatoes chasing fawns, I try and keep the babies happy and the hungry critters away from the chickens.
