California - Northern

Whew, I need a chicken break.

I'm in full on prep for my County Fair and have been baking for the last few days. So far I've made my cookie dough for; chocolate chip, gingersnap, oatmeal, peanut butter, shortbread & sugar. I've also baked, pound cake, cupcakes, pumpkin bread, zucchini bread, lemon/blueberry bread. I've finished my French bread, graham bread, raisin bread & white bread. I have thirty-five things I haven't started yet (entries go in on June 10th to judge on the 11th.

I still have to mount my photo and organize my canned goods.

I like the old lady sports, LOL

Although I haven't found time to sit and tat for a couple of years now.

I sent you a pm. Im not quite sure how you get all of that done? I would never call all that Old lady sports. Its exhausting just thinking about it!

I'm in El Dorado Co, so I'm pretty far from you.

This year will be the first time that I will be using leg bands to separate hens... I don't want to mess around with buying the wrong thing over and over. I have seen aluminum adjustable, plastic spiral, all weather plastic, plastic bandettes,.... oh my goodness.

What works well , how hard are they to put on?

P.S. :links are always more than welcome

Kandi, I just use colored zip ties. Super easy and cut right off with a pair of snips. They can wear any color or combo of colors.

Just wanted to share some pictures of my BCM chicks i hatched from Sunny and Debs eggs, as well as a couple of my OE from my Blue Copper Marans and my Ameraucana Roo.
Here's some boys I think are really nice. Check out the feathers on their feet!

They're looking good Pam!

I got your message and I have most of that. I'll get back with you this evening.

DH just got home from a run to the store for missing ingredients for me. Have you ever tried to explain to a non-grocery shopper how to find crystalized ginger, wheat bran, unflavored gelatin, caraway seed, rye flour, etc, etc, etc. I can't even tell you how many phone calls I got..............

But he made it home with most of it...................and other than the phone calls I got some uninterrupted baking time.

Okay, the whole wheat loaf just went in for it's final rise.

Did I tell you my new range has a bread proofing cycle??? I was so excited when I saw it, now I never have to worry about finding just the right warm niche in the kitchen.

YES! And then he gets mad at me if I tell him what he supposed to get!

Here's one of my favorite girls. She's very sweet and I can't wait to see her grow up.

This is the OE from the hatch before and she took the mother role to this hatch. She's beautiful but why doesn't she have a tail?

I moved them into the grow out pen which has an adjoining run to my layer coop that free range. After the went out I let the babies out and closed the gate to the run. I opened the roof to the laying box so they could get in to lay but they are none too happy!

And lastly, someone laid a golf ball today. Never seen such a round egg!
Well, that explains why Silkies try to hatch Golf Balls.. because there is a slight CHANCE that it actually might be an egg....

First off, I am getting exhausted just reading about what you are doing today.. besides getting hungry.

Secondly, I am jealous of that oven. I have to make all my own breads etc (wheat gluten intolerant) and it never fails where I put it to rise either gets too hot or too cool.. so I either have sour poofs or flatbread.

Now I pay the extra $$$ for the gluten free bread mix that works in the bread maker... only way to get it even close to right. If ANYBODY knows of a really good gluten free sourdough bread breadmaker recipe - Please Share?

I said I needed a tiny bit of sesame seeds from the bulk bin in the health food section (literally just for bread topping), I got about two cups. Good thing you can freeze them. I said I needed wheat bran and wheat flakes. I got two large bags of wheat bran and a giant box of wheat flakes cereal. I asked why the two bags.................."you said you needed wheat bran and flakes" (both were wheat bran). I don't make that many bran muffins in five years, LOL. The list said "wheat bran". I told him exactly where to find it and said there will be a bin right next to it that says oat bran, I want the wheat. I got a phone call that said.................."One bin says oat bran and one says wheat bran. Your list says wheat, which should I get?" I'm not kidding here.

Good thing I love him (and it saved me a trip to the store, LOL)

Zipties are the simplest way to go and I'm using them for the newborn chicks. I prefer numbered bandettes starting when they feather out, because there are more color & number options for individual identification. I use the different colors & numbers to identify when they were hatched and so I know which sire and hen they are from. I do have to increase the size of the bandettes as they grow. I keep 3 sizes in all colors & numbers from 1-50.
You just stretch the band open wide to get it on the leg and then it spirals around the leg when you release it. I can do it alone but it's faster to have a helper.
I've heard that the thin plastic spiral (no number) bands can be sharp. All bands need to be checked often when the bird is growing and once a year for mature birds.

Thank you for looking for me.

That first one sure requires jumping thru hoops.. plus buying a bunch of stuff from them to make it "right"

The second one looks more to my liking - and it is for a bread machine. I think I will try it, thank you!

(Can you have your hubby pick me up some Amaranth flour please?

I think I have everything else on hand)
No problem, it should be right next to the $10 one pound bag of organic rye flour he bought!
