California - Northern

I feel for everyone down in the valley. I have been outside and it is hot.

Yes, it is hot. We have a heat wave warning from Thursday to Saturday of this week--105 and 106....I will need to get the misters on a timer again.

I will get a picture of the Black Penedesenca pullet today.

Kandi,

Here's an example of the bucket waterer and a how to from someone's blog. (Don't type in chicken nipple waterer to look for pictures, it gives you an "adult content" warning, LOL I didn't go there

wow that is too hot.

ugh, hideously hot. hope everyone in that kind of weather comes through okay!

a few more photos from yesterday:

eleanor is totally over being broody & back to laying eggs, but she insists on laying them in the garden, instead of in the coop's laying boxes -- here she's making a nest for herself in a patch of feverfew...

a better snap of Max Junior, at 6 weeks of age -- he's a cross of SFH (max) and crested CL (speedy, the one i had to give away to my neighbors) , and his feathers are *fascinating*, almost plaid in places! plus he's got that tiny black crest coming in...

and a better photo of the two birchen marans babies, now 10 days old.

wow that is too hot.

I lost two Marans when it got that hot last year. Now I use the misters and have a bunch of shade. Kim in Guinda lost Delawares last year too.

It is a bit hotter in Guinda. These temps will be a test for the Besse and the Blue Egg Layers from the UofArkansas. The Penes and Basque scoff at temperatures like this!

Anyone have ideas about Blue's foot? It looks like she/he has an extra toe growing out of the foot!

Can you do a macro? The photo on the left almost looks like a toenail (that would be WEIRD), the photo on the right looks like a leg feather follicle (the marans cross).

verify the temperature inside the brinsea with a Brinsea Spot check. I set my Octagon 40 to 100.3 to get the temperature inside the brinsea to 99.6.

Remember to keep the vent all the way open too. Do not trust the digital read out on top.
Hmmm, mine is accurate and I get great hatches with the settings recommended by Brinsea.
