I have a Marans girl wanting to sit on some eggs. This is the second time she's tried to go broody. Well I think I'll give her some to hatch :) she's in the coop in one of the nesting boxes. The other hens and roo can get to her so should I seclude her now or once the chiks hatch?

That is the oddest thing. I've never seen that either. As long as the top and bottom beak are aligned, she should be able to eat/drink/defend herself, so I wouldn't worry about it. I find it odd that the comb is correctly aligned on her head though.

Definitely don't use her in any kind of a breeding program though. But she should live a normal life otherwise.

She was gotten as a pet, and won't have any roosters to flirt with, so no worries about a breeding program. :)

You can try and move her now but she may fight you on it. If she will move I'd do it pe
Re good wigs rather then post so she does not kill anything if she keeps go g back to the old
spot or breaks.

My 2 little 3 week old BLRW's that I hatched are getting big!! Their feathering is weird though. I'm thinking I have a boy and a girl.
One has a ton of feather, the other has hardly any. Is this normal? Does anyone know what color they will be when they grow up? At first I was thinking Black Laced Red, but now I don't know....

That is a hilarious massacre! It was funny to try and figure it out, but I am still not sure about the wigs....

I would do it before good wigs too and as soon as you know she is serious or you will have to remove her once a day and take out all the new eggs, and there is a chance she can get chased off her nest by the other birds and go to a different one instead... I have found moving them at night and keeping them contained until they go back to setting works for me.. before I give them the important eggs.

On my LF BLRW the boy took forever to grow in his feathers. The girl was faster. Their chick feathers were not helpful to see what their final colors were, they changed quite a bit. I think both of mine looked black/brown for the longest time but they both turned out to be splash laced (very light).

I can't find my bator calendar or remember the day I put them in.

I remember buying the eggs because I was at trader joes waiting for the wine guy to stop going on and on about his amazing work experience! I turned around and there were the fertile eggs. I thought " what a cheep way (haha I said cheep) to work out my humidity issues" and that's all I remember!!!!

Good grief , now I have to interrogate all the kids!

My broodies like to brood in the laying boxes, usually two in the favorite laying boxes (I have two now). I let them do their thing, the other hens keep their distance. The laying boxes are about 2 feet off the ground so I put a board up to keep them from falling down but you'd be surprised how they learn to manage the ramp and mom has them out.

I freaked out the first time they did this but have learned they take care of them.

Oh, and I've never had luck moving them, so I let them be. After they all hatch I moved the first ones but then hen moves them back into the coop so now I just leave them.
