Welcome Back Megan!

Amy, your chickens look really nice. I hope you have some Pullets from that last batch. If not, hatching may be in your future. Since your spouse travels between Redding and Chico, it would be easy for him to pick up a dozen or so eggs from Debi in Red Bluff or even get some from Paradise. Those Show Girls are outrageous.

It was kind of Hot yesterday so my chickens were panting. Mr Corwin was cooling off by walking around flapping his wings..Silly rooster.

This morning I opened the door and felt a cool breeze so of course the first thing I think to do (after letting the layers out of their coops) is make bread:

This is my basic White Bread Recipe with a cup of Azure Ultra Fine Whole Wheat flour.

It's raising now. More pictures to come....

Thanks for the welcome back! Soooo happy to be back and participating.. Instead of stalking the thread in another country! Lol I've never baked bread before.. Sounds delicious!

Good morning everyone! I put my new Basque pullet in the coop last night. This morning I heard a few short scuffles. I let them out to forage and the new girl stayed away from my original 3. Now they're back in the coop and she's hiding in the corner. The rooster has pecked at her a few times and she gets really scared and hides behind the box. I have extra waterer and feeders for her. Do you think it's ok to come and check on her every 30 minutes from now on? Or should I just separate them and try again later today?

Here's a picture. That's my new pullet laying in the left corner by the box:

As long as they don't do serious damage (bleeding beyond a peck spot), I'd let them work out the dynamics and just check often. She'll start out at the bottom of the pecking order, who knows where she'll end up.

Welcome home!

Deb

Meg, maybe just keep an eye on them. It's difficult integrating one new bird. I always try to do it with pairs, so they have a buddy. What is that tub with wheels in your coop?

Laura! Penngrove is such a nice area.

Ron, I can't believe you are baking bread. It's still hot here. I do welfare checks every couple hours here during the day when it gets like this.

Stay cool everyone,
Kim

thanks for the welcome, all -- I'm actually not IN Penngrove itself, but up on Sonoma Mtn -- which is great, everyone's fogged in below this morning but we're above it!

my big accomplishment this morning was to lay out the site of my future chicken coop (construction starts tomorrow) -- it's partly under an oak tree, so it will have sun in the morning (in the summer, at least) but shade in the afternoon -- and will be 8x12' (rake added for scale):

and i will be picking up my first chick (or two, haven't quite decided) today!! she/they will be 5-week-old cuckoo marans, from a farm in Sebastopol. she/they will be followed in about 2 weeks by an australorp chick my friend's broody hen is raising, who will be the same age as the marans -- hope to introduce them without too much trouble.

and THEN they'll be followed in august by four chicks i've ordered from Deann at Just Struttin' ranch -- hoping to end up with a flock of 6 (or 7).

We just got back from a long vacation Friday night and haven't built our roosts yet. We are using the tub to put the slats of wood on for now. They like sleeping in their tub so far haha. We'll be working on roosts and nest boxes early this week :-)

Hi Kim,

I was checking on them a bunch yesterday too. I won't be able to during the week--I will get my youngest to check on them.

I am going to try baking some Cocoa Drop cookies too.

I thought it was a novel new idea for catching the droppings or something.

The Bread has been split into loaf pans now.

First a Chicken picture. This is one of my two FBC Marans Cockerels. He is about 15 weeks old:

Back to the Bread:

The dough has doubled and I have my loaf shaping tools ready:

The first loaf ready for the pan:

Three loaves are now raising:

Time to start the cookies!
