Amy Beth the coop looks awesome! You guys have been working hard these hot days!
OMG Ron I had no idea you had so many! Wish I could be somewhere that would allow so many! :-)
I wish I had the coop room for so many! I suddenly feel stifled by only being able to have 16 in my coop size. LOL Money is really tight for us so we can;t just build another coop because we want to. Patience is a virtue...or something right?

It has been hot and I have a tan for like the first time in yearsssss! Just need to tell my legs to catch up to my arms though.

I love penedesenca

I have eggs in my incubators!

A new one to me are Pita Pintas. I also have EO Basque and Partridge Pendesencas in there.

I was worried that I would not be able to tell the chiks apart until I found a picture of Pita Pinta chicks:

Marraduna EO Basque look like:

Megan, some of these are the ones you have now! They sure do change...

I hope I have a good hatch!

I can't find it now, but I read an article that said Eastern Cedar is different from Western Cedar. The cedar out here is not toxic to chickens. It's the oil that is toxic to insects and apparently it goes away fast. Point being that it probably is not toxic even to the lice and mites fairly quickly.

I did find this: http://blog.mcmurrayhatchery.com/2011/11/17/is-cedar-a-suitable-chicken-coop-building-material/

Ron
Yes our natice cedar is Calocedrus decurrens in the east there Chameocyparis and Junipers called Cedar. we have another one called a western Red Cedar (real far norcal up to Alaska) called Thuja Plicata..
they are kinda all related. like a porsche is related to a Audi. Both cars. Nice Cars but that is about it.

Yeah.....
Just ordered some Wheaten Penedesenca hatching eggs...

Now I will have wheaten (well if they hatch) and also my crele's

Sorry for the 1000 posts! I tried to do multi-posts to not over run the thread! We've been busy the past couple of days.. I missed you guys!

My Basque introductions are going great. They're not best friends or anything but they will eat and drink at the same time and I don't see any squabbling! Poor babies were hot today. Gave them ice cold watermelon and they gobbled them up. I'm so glad they have them at the dollar store now.. more treats for the chickens! Johnny is building the pen for them and it should be done tomorrow. We're also putting in misters (for the chickens and US!) I'll post pics soon! Love having a handy man around the house :-) Here's a pic of one of the kids I nanny holding Chema the rooster. Chema is sooooo awesome!

When we picked up our Barnevelder chicks on Saturday, I noticed one was a little less active than the other two but she was eating and drinking and her pooped looked fine. I started adding Save-A-Chick to their water just in case. Yesterday afternoon she was keeping her eyes closed a lot and had trouble standing up. I separated her from the others immediately. When I picked her up it was hard for her to hold her neck up. She died within 2 hours. Sound familiar?! Yup, I lost 4 out of my 5 chicks a month ago the same way. What the heck is going on? I can't figure out it's something I'm doing or if it has to do with the people I got them from? But if it was their fault, my Basque's would be sick because they just spent a month at their house while I was on vacation. Ugh! I sent the dead chick in for a Necropsy today. Not exactly how I planned to spend my 27 birthday! hahaha

Ron - Here's a picture of the future EO chicks father:

One more quick thing and then I'll stop! One of my Barnevelder chicks has an eye infection. I've been spraying Vetericyn on it for 3 days now and see no change. She came back from the "chicken sitters" like that. Can you guys take a look at the picture and let me know what you think it is?

Meg- Aww poor thing. I don't know about the ninja sickness that seems to silently attack your babies. Is it just attacking the babies? And could it be an eye injury with the chicken? My ducks would get them from others poking or scratching the others eyes (usually accidental) and I did drops and neosporin without the pain reliever (can be poisonous) and they all cleared up. My gosling though- she arrived as a day old to me with an eye infection. Def bacterial since her mate never caught it. Just kept doing drops and neosporin and time. She is 3 weeks old now and it's almost normal. It's so stressful. I hope someone can help!

If it doesn't make sense - I blame autocorrect. Sent from my sweet iPhone 4s.

hi folks --

quick question: i've had my six-week-old cuckoo marans pullets for two whole days now, and they are quite frightened by me -- despite trying to move slowly & speak in soothing tones, and offer treats (except they're so skittish, they don't seem to peck at the treats until i've moved away, so not sure there's any association being made). it's not clear to me that they got much human interaction as they were growing up this far.

so, any suggestions on calming them down & helping them to adjust, or is that just a matter of time?

thanks,
laura
I think Ron's idea is perfect. If they associate you with food, you will soon find that they will come running and be under foot, even if you don't have any food!

Ohhhh hubby's gonna build me a poop board! Woot! He's so nice! I think instead of doing it 2 roosts deep I will line 2 walls with them- put the feeder/waterers under one and the lay boxes under the other? If I put the poop boards 2 roosts deep that sucker would have to come out like 4 feet! That's a lot of reaching to clean plus climbing underneath to access the lay boxes for collection or cleaning. Still mentally working it out.

We did decide on adding fill dirt to the bottom of the coop, PDZ layer and then the pine on top. Having the poop boards will help cut down on the pine shavings usage I think. This will also be a nice experiment on how we want to build our big coop later. :D
2 roosts sound very practical. I like what you said about making them modular so they can be easily reused for the big coop. That's smart. I have been reading more about food grade DE, diatomaceous earth. Have you used this? Sounds like a good all around insect/parasite preventative. Still need to look into the PDZ more and see if it can be use similarly.

For a duck lady, you sure are taking a shine to chickens! I imagine, in a few years, you will be telling us about your many breeding projects and your coop-condo-complex! (Chicken math is coming!

Your Basque Rooster is beautiful! So sorry to hear you lost another chick. Sounds frustrating. Hopefully you can get some answers from the necropsy. As for your poor Barnevelder, if you haven't done so already, I would suggest thoroughly checking under those eyelids to make sure nothing is in there. Don't know how many foxtails I've pulled from dogs and cats eyes. (Can chickens get foxtails?) I saw someone post about an eye problem, and she actually removed something that looked like a big piece of cottage cheese from the eye. Pus or something? I'll see if i can find the thread. Good luck!

Found it- WTHeck is wrong with my hen's eye?? HEAVY PICS- graphic Hope it helps.

Quote: Thanks. We underestimated how dilapidated the coop was until we started really tearing it apart. It's coming along and with some strategic planning it can last us a couple years at most. The bottom is being lined with a hard ware cloth floor- using 2x8 and 2x4s and attached the hard ware cloth to it then laying it inside the coop to keep out critters. We have a few little spaces to block off (like above the door and put hard ware cloth on the door and we should be able to move them in and add a temp roost while we build the boxes and poop board. I like the idea of a broody box with a shelf on top. We are trying to make everything removable so when we build bigger and better next year or the year after- we can re-use these things. I am trying to squeeze the most of the space. I think I can technically get 5 laying boxes below and I could section 1 off to be a broody box maybe.

I need to figure out how many chickens can fit on the poop board/roost. The coop is 8 feet across...doing the math I can fit up to 16 chickens in an 8x8 coop with 10x10 run. So I am wondering if the 7/8 feet of roost bar will be enough for them all or if I should do it 2 roost bars deep?

Anyone?
With the height you have, I think you'd do well with the ladder type roost. I'm going to replace the roost in my Polish pen with one. Gives the chickens a choice of height and they don't poop on each other. I have a similar setup to your first choice except I have my laying boxes two high and two wide. Remember, they'll all lay in the same one or two boxes so you don't really need a lot of boxes. As for a specific broody box, they'll most likely go broody in the box everyone's laying in. It's best to have a private, sectioned off spot so the other hens cant get to the new chicks (this said from a woman who just had two broodies hatch chicks in the laying boxes). Someone mentioned a cabinet, I'd also make sure you have room for a couple cans to keep feed in and room to hang feeders and waterers. I think you have a nice setup. Certainly have done a lot of work. You're chickens should be very happy!

Gosh chicken and duck worlds are two totallllly different worlds. The ducks hang out in the pond. All. Day. I have to bribe them with peas at 8pm to get them back in their house now. I bring them lunch and then that's about all I do with them right now. Their coop doesn't have to be as thought out since no one roosts. It's a big room, with waterers, a food dish and hay. Boom done. LOL I muck it out once a month or sometimes a little more often. Brooding ducks is harder, but if you have a pond...caring for the adults is cake. I think I am enjoying chickens because ...well the ducks stay on the pond. I can watch them but they just want to do duck things...which doesn't involve me or coming out of that pond. LOL

thanks all for the advice -- i'll just keep being patient with them & bringing food...

unfortunately my next-door neighbor, who will have a (fairly distant) view of the (2/3 built, still empty) coop, is totally freaking out, accusing me of ruining his view and devaluing his property. very frustrating.

best,
laura
