frustrated here, my brand-new Rcom incubator does not seem to be getting warm enough -- i've put a secondary thermometer in with the eggs and it can't seem to get above 84.7°F, despite being set at 99.5. i've tried re-setting the factory settings, making sure the lid's on tight, everything i can think of -- now have sent the company an email, but thinking perhaps i should put the eggs under one of my remaining broodies for now... argh, should have road-tested it before getting eggs i really WANT to hatch!

I did read about a batch of rcoms that had a bad soldering job at the Thermostat connection. Can you check to make sure a connector did not come off during shipping? I have seen that before with shipped computers.

i'm not sure how/where i would check? it's definitely warmer inside than the ambient temp in my house (high 60s in the house, mid-80s in the incubator), but it isn't up in the 90s, just by feel...

It can take 24 hours for an incubator to completely warm up. The temperature is raised gently. The more egg set the longer it can take.

I have a Brisea so I do not know where of if there are connectors. A quick google search suggests that there is a difference between the reading on the top of the rcom and at egg level. Not as much as you are seeing though.

I know nothing about Rcoms but can you increase the guage above the 99.5 and see if the temp responds? If it goes up maybe you can just keep going up until 99.5 is reached even if the guage says 110. I have the Brinsea Spot Check which was a life saver when my Genesis spazzed out 3 days before hatch. I had to rely on that for the remainder of the hatch.

Just a thought you have probably already thought of.

and mixed news after a visit to the coop -- the marans eggs have started hatching (hooray!), but Maggie the basque has died. poor girl.

I am so sorry!

Oh and Jason. I know you aren't coming by Roseville on your way to the Bay but right now Roseville is lovely. Nice breeze and clear sunny skies. It is when we dont have that breeze we get the smoke settling in.

aha, perhaps i have just not been patient enough -- i plugged it in & got it started around 6pm last night, and had assumed it would warm up fully overnight -- and just checked again, now the temp is at 85.5°, so i'll just give it some more time. not much else i can do at this point anyway!

and thanks for the sympathies re: Maggie, she was a sweet (though timid) girl and a wonderfully reliable layer. i feel so torn in two directions, as i'm SO excited about the marans eggs hatching (each SPPR broody has one chick out already -- one has three eggs, the other has seven) at the same time!
