California - Northern

aha, perhaps i have just not been patient enough -- i plugged it in & got it started around 6pm last night, and had assumed it would warm up fully overnight -- and just checked again, now the temp is at 85.5°, so i'll just give it some more time. not much else i can do at this point anyway!

and thanks for the sympathies re: Maggie, she was a sweet (though timid) girl and a wonderfully reliable layer. i feel so torn in two directions, as i'm SO excited about the marans eggs hatching (each SPPR broody has one chick out already -- one has three eggs, the other has seven) at the same time!

While patiently waiting, see if you can verify the accuracy of the thermometer and maybe find a new digital one that reads tenths.

I use a brinsea spot check but those have to be shipped.

Oh and Jason. I know you aren't coming by Roseville on your way to the Bay but right now Roseville is lovely. Nice breeze and clear sunny skies. It is when we dont have that breeze we get the smoke settling in.
lol thank you I may have to head that direction too

sorry about the chicken :(
My R-com was warmed up quickly though it was over 80 in the house at the time. Let it run its course today and feel the eggs then,
The R-com is really well insulated so it should warm quickly and stay there

Sorry about your hen

Hope the hatching chicks take away some of the sadness.

Hatching day here too

And a fun surprise chick in this batch of bantam Polish. A solid blue! Not sure yet how many are pure buff laced. Don't want to disturb them until the last chick hatches.

the secondary thermometer i'm using is my digital indoor/outdoor one -- and i have an extra analog outdoor thermometer outside in the garden, and the indoor/outdoor one agrees with it -- so while it might not be completely exact, it's pretty close to accurate. and it reads tenths -- at 85.8° now, so it's slowly creeping up.

and hooray, hatching everywhere! that makes the day extra-cheerful!

mine are some combination of birchen & duckwing marans, so i'm very excited to see what they might look like/grow up to look like...
