i can't see a thing without my reading glasses, either. keep hovering over the eggs, hoping for some movement! (the pipping isbar has broken a small fragment of shell off of its hole so far, and i could see it move slightly through the membrane... nothing from the others (yet?), though...)

Aw heckkkkk no! Silkies aremy least favorite bird to eat meat wise the skin is back. The neat is black the testes are black ( in a silkie cross roo he has one black one, freaky!) The bones are darker but not midnight.

I stew all my silkies. There are a fair few black to the bone breeds in the Orient. There is argument if silkies were the first or just a specialized offshoot.

If anyone has ever wondered how many times a skunk can spray before it runs out it is more then 3 and less then 6. On a related note some pro tips for trapping skunks do NOT put the cage right next to the door of your coop!
Also, vinegar washes work well on human hair.....

In other other related news: our new trap is working !

Well I am sure at one time I was curious how many times a skunk could spray before it was on empty. Good to know and once is more than enough for me to want to run screaming! lololol Glad to know you tested it for me.

i'm hoping for some hatching isbars soon, too -- these are the ones that spent a day or so in the malfunctioning incubator, at too low of temps (~85 most of the time?), then sat out at room temp for another day, and THEN went in at the correct temp on august 27 -- that makes today day 19, but i'm not sure whether the day of being at 85° might have gotten any early development going, so i switched the egg-turner off on thursday, and am now keeping an eye on them... just in case...
I will be watching closely to see how these do with all the weirdness and challenge during this hatch.

I only have extras in one breed. I have to select my keepers, soon. I will have extra Silver Gray Dorking pullets available for layer (not breeder) flocks. They will lay white eggs. $10. each. Can deliver to Davis, since I go there once a month to pick up feed.

Such pretty feathers..... I wish I had room for more! As it is I think my lucky 13 are going to be it for a while.
Good morning! Okay it is afternoon, but I am taking a break from packing and catching up...... BYC is the best for not getting anything done.

The first step is to give her yogurt and massage the crop. The stinky smell takes several days to show up. If the Massage does not work, then you have to cut an incision above the crop and clean it out. The incision heals up after treatment. Look for instructions on BYC.

Since she is eating and drinking but randomly falling asleep, she may have the initial Mareks virus. I would separate her, giver her a teaspoon of yogurt and some vitamins like save a chick in the water each day. Giver her grit and starter feed.

All chickens get mareks but few show the symptoms of the initial infection. 5 to 3 percent will die of Mareks cancer at around two years of age.

AHHHHH You actually cut into the bird? While it is awake?

And there was much rejoicing!

My sick girls are not eating much. I think it might be they are off aspirin now so in more pain even with the spray.

I made a mealworm scramble with some vitamins this morning. They did eat some but didn't finish it. I'm going to try some watermelon later to keep them hydrated.

The things we do...

The things we do and then still worry about them wondering what else we could be doing. If our worrying alone made them better they would be good to go in no time!

the two pips so far:

Daisy Jr. (black australorp x SFH)

My flashlight is super bright and I am starting to think reading glasses may be required soon.

Yes, while awake. anesthesia is very bad for chickens. A large percentage will never wake up.

I wish my chickens would behave more like these pigeons. They pass a piece of nesting grass when they trade off on the eggs, it's very cute to see. We shall see how they do at raising their young, they are supposed to be a proven pair, so my fingers are crossed for two healthy squeekers.

Mass reply time!
To Happy Chooks: What hens do you have? I recall you being pretty far north of here, but I'm sure it'd be worth it!
To debs_flock: What sort of hens do you think you could pull together? I'd love to show up at my friend's door with a little variety-pack of hens, and I know you have some fancy stuff!
To capayvalleychick: Your Dorkings are beautiful! So fluffy! When will you next be in Davis? Also which feed store do you use? I always just drop by Western...they have big bags of King which my hens seem almost TOO fond of. They're little piggies.

So, I lost one of the quail. Not like -RIP- like it literally disappeared. No Idea where it went. It was in the brooder (closed with a top and all that), in the garage around 11 AM. At 2 it wasn't in there anymore. Still have the 2 chicks and the other quail. Weird!!

Quail will flush and pop the tops of brooders and escape. Are they adults or babies? If they are younglings listenvforvthe calls they freak out when alone.

Well let's hope the other doesn't disappear. What are you using for bedding? Maybe it did pass away and is under the bedding?

They are 5 weeks old now. I'll go and try and listen again, now that the rest of the chickens have gone to bed. I have pine shavings in the brooder, and I felt around in the shavings a little, and didn't see it. Do they fly? These things are tiny!! I don't know where it could have gone.
