California - Northern

We need a member to help on the Egg Train.

We have to move a roo to Southern Cal and I need someone to transport from Santa Rosa to Stockton or Manteca. I'm in Modesto and I need to turn around and go to Fresno.

Please someone tell us you are coming this way.

hey everyone,

i was wondering if any of you nor cal folks raised/bred small lavender silkies? long shot, i know. I live in Reno and am having a heck of a time finding one, but it would be the perfect third chicken to add to my flock (and since three is the max number i can have, i wanna make sure i get all the ones i want without settling!

) I really dont want to have to order ten of them from a hatchery, and then have to find homes for the other nine, plus im not all that interested in doing babies again.

anywhooo...if anyone over there has em for sale, please message me! im willing to travel to sac, maybe a little farther.
thank you!

I personally do not know anyone who has any, but the California state fair is starting in a couple of weeks. There are always a ton of breeders and chicken-raisers showing at the Fur & Feathers exhibit... I'll check to see if I see any and will ask around. Remind me again when it gets closer... it starts July 14th, and I am going opening day! I can't WAIT to get to the farm exhibits... my #1 favorite part about the state fair, always has been. I could care less about the steenkin' rides.

Just show me the farm animals and ag exhibits.

wow, great info! i appreciate it! in fact i might be interested in going! where is it going to be? ive never been to a fair, not even the one here in reno! and i bet california has some awesome fairs!

The California State Fair is here in Sacramento, right off I-80 when you come into town... take the Cal Expo/Exposition Blvd exit. It runs from July 14th through August 3rd or something like that (check out www.bigfun.org for more info).

I have seen some of the most exotic, beautiful chickens ever in my life at the state fair. In fact, it was at last year's exhibit that I SERIOUSLY started considering getting chickens. There are always people from the UC Davis ag school and, of course, people who are showing their birds and competing for ribbons. Every once in a while, you'll find an egg in the bottom of a cage.

You could be very likely to find someone who has the very bird(s) you seek for your flock.

Hope to see you at the state fair!

I love the state fair! Watched 4h'ers show chickens last year. Hmm, we should touch base as fair gets closer and see if any of us will be there the same day. Mini meet n greet.

yep. im convinced. IM GOING!

YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME! (and no offense to my nevadans, but you guys have been more helpful on this in the past few hours than my fellow nevadans have been in the last few days! maybe you can sense that im from California, hhaha))

FYI, I posted a thread under the meetups section regarding having a meetup at the state fair for those of us within driving distance. Go check out the message and we'll organize a date, time, place to meet.

I can't wait to meet more BYCers!

I'm all excited and stuff now.

If anybody in the Sacramento area is looking for a Unique Incubator let me know. I have a home made incubator for sale. You can see it on my BYC page, just note it has had some modifications to better it. The inside has been painted with Kills paint to avoid mold in the humid environment, the fan has been moved to allow better circulation and a Auto turner has been added. The auto turner can hold 28 eggs, but without the turner I would guess it could hold about 40 eggs. I have done several hatches in this bator, including Chickens, Ducks, Quail and geese. It's and awesome bator, but I moved and can no longer raise birds, so I would like to pass it on. I'm asking $60 for it, but I spent will over $100 making it. I made it to get everything I desired as far as temp and humidity stability, and it has done wonderful.
