I really love silkies but... I feel bad for them.... I feel like they can't really see lol. I had a friend with silkies in their layer flock and the silkies were always gotten by the predators.
That is why my Polish are in a covered kennel. The Silkies will live with them. I do trim the crests on my Polish so they can see. Mine have very heavy crests. The new babies are around 8 weeks old now and the pullets crests are the largest I have had in such young birds. They could use a trim already!

Update on my Silkie hatch . . 9 of the 13 eggs have hatched. 5 porcelain, 2 white, 1 blue, 1 lavender. The lavender was upside down and had to be helped out. One of the chicks that egg was marked porcelain looks more like a partridge, which would be neat! The 1 buff and 1 paint egg have not pipped yet :( I was really looking forward to those colors. It is only day 21 so there is still hope.

Congrats!

I would live to see pictures, especially of the porcelain.

@PetRock I'm so sorry to hear about your health condition. How awful. I knew someone who had lupus and she had the same symptoms. What if you used a zinc oxide based sun block? Could your diet change have caused this? Maybe you are lacking something in your diet now?
Kim, I have actually been fighting this for the past 3 years. I had hoped that my diet change would help but as I healed my gut, etc. I guess it freed up my body to react to the sun with a vengeance. My doctor had asked me in the past if it got worse when I had been in the sun and I answered no. But, at that point I was never out of the sun for any period of time. This summer, a friend suggested that it was an allergy to the sun so I stayed inside for 2 weeks straight. My arms & hands healed up! But then we went on vacation and I went swimming with Monet after 4 PM. 2-3 days later I had a major break out everywhere on my upper body not covered by my swimsuit. Then we spent a day processing chickens at the farm. I was mostly in the shade with my UPF shirt and hat on but I pushed the sleeves up under my outer chambray shirt so my expensive shirt wouldn't get chicken guts on it. I learned that chambray fabric does not protect against UV rays because 2-3 days later, my arms from the elbow down were covered with the hive like rash. I finally couldn't stand it any longer and went back to the doctor. Since lupus was a possibility, my doctor had me get my blood tested for it. It came back negative, thank God! I am looking at zinc oxide, zinc dioxide sun blocks. I do have some allergies to fragrances and chemicals so I have to be careful which one I use. Some of the good ones are $30 for 3 oz! I just need to bite the bullet and place my amazon order!

Congrats!

I would live to see pictures, especially of the porcelain.
Thanks

I love taking pictures of my chickens, so you will be sure to see some of the chicks!

Show Cages - Anybody want to share an order to save on shipping???

I'm going to place an order with http://keippercooping.com/poulty.htm

Prices are lower for quantity. These are the true exhibition quality coops that are smooth wire (not hardware cloth type wire) that is strong enough to last for many years. They are collapsible for storage.

I need these cages for getting my birds used to caging for shows. They are very handy to have for using to line up your birds to evaluate them, side by side. Or for any other time you need to separate or display your poultry.

I'm located NW of Sacramento in Guinda. Looking for people within a couple hour drive to share on the order. Email me at [email protected]

Is there a name for this color? Is it wheaten blue? This isn't my bird but it is what she looks like.

It's not fun. Just 10 min in the sun without protection and I break out in a very bad rash. I have been online shopping for UPF shirts, jackets, and hats. They are not very cute and way over priced. But if they help keep me rash free then they are worth the money.
Yes and after time you have them all bought so you will have variety..... you won't be growing out of them any time soon right?

It just stinks having to buy new stuff for a pain in the butt thing you don't want to deal with in the first place.

Especially if all you're using is a handsaw because the circular saw scares you

Soccer practice and such didn't help a whole lot, either, but still...

Still haven't told my hubbie about needing to make a quarantine area...
I got over my fear of the circular saw by the time I got done with the coop. It only took 6 weekends to overcome my nervousness.....

Yay!!!!! Post a pic...we egg geeks get a kick out of first egg pics and first __________ (insert color or other adjective here) egg, and first ptp and first zip and first chick out... Feed our obsession please.

I hope so, Please let us know.
Okay, just for you! and Gryeyes of course so she can see what an egg really looks like.

Here is the guilty party. Wondering what we are going to do with that thing that she left there on the ground.

Obviously the middle one. The other is what Costco is calling their large organic egg. Seems small in my hand but looks pretty standard for a first issue.

My hatch day is just a week away!!!
It is kind of a nice diversion with all the individual hatches going to see what will pop out.

I have 3 lavender orps, 2 bc marans, & a cream brabanter. They were all hatched late April/early may. I haven't gotten any eggs yet. Are these breeds slow to mature or?
All of mine hatched April 28th and I got my first egg from my biggest bird an English Black Orpington. 24 weeks 3 days.......
I only have one other squatter that started squatting the day after Bertha, and she is a Welsummer. In my experience the Wellies are the slowest to lay, however she is the only other one even pretending like she is interested in laying an egg.

The d'Uccles are Mille Fleur. They are just about 3 months old at this point so hopefully by the time they start laying and I have a broody to hatch their eggs I will remember this :) It is fun to speculate about what you might get with random pairings.

I just wanted to let you know that I am sorry as well. That has to be tough. Does it happen on cloudy days too?

I really like the looks of my new EEs and will share pics with you one when I can get some good ones is blue laced buffish the other is black with gold and white flecks but mostly black. The gal from whom I got them says that they are laying but I don't know because she also said that since she isn't home when they are doing it she doesn't know who lays what. She has about 16 hens/pullets and gets about 10 eggs a day soooo who knows. The blue laced girl looks ready the black one not so much.

One of my April EEs was nosing/beaking around the nest box this morning

I am just excited to see what colors they produce so I can see if I HAVE to add true Ameraucanas this year or not

I hear that Millie Fleur d'Uccles are of the broody type too. I really wanted one of those, but no one I knew had any at the time. I love the porcelain colors....

I wish I could take better pictures, but top down like I do is not a good angle for sure. I was just in a hurry to get the picture and then get dinner started! And yes I would like to see the EE egg pic when you get an egg.

Wow that seems like a really good hatch rate. They were shipped eggs weren't they?

Just out of curiosity, has anyone checked your Vitamin D level? May be totally unrelated, but I too have other auto immune "issues" I have been dealing with and one doctor checked it randomly and my Vitamin D level was at a 10! Rickets level is an 8. Needless to say I had to get it back up and some things have improved with the increase in Vitamin D...... Random thought for you......You never know where the one idea will come from that can help fix things.

Hopefully, they will be too big for me rather than too small. I don't plan on ever again being the size I was 6 months ago!

Thank you for the suggestion on Vitamin D. I have been trying to eat more dark green leafy vegetables like kale and spinach because they are higher in Vitamin D. But I have no idea what my levels are. Something else to talk to my Dr about! My nurse practitioner is very into nutrition and she told me that almonds are high in Vitamin D. Have yet to research that one.

she is!!! and it *is* descriptive, given how much these two fly (up into trees, onto the nesting box roof, etc.)

actually, i do -- i have been waffling back and forth about whether to keep him or not. on the one hand, he's a total charmer & has good coloring (although a bit bright compared to the SOP), but on the other hand, i don't have the space to take FOUR breeds seriously (really should only focus on one!). so, if he's still looking, please tell the guy to get in touch with me.
I just gave him your email address.
