California - Northern

To my No. Calif neighbors...I'm about 40mi North of Sacramento in Yuba City and we are fairly new to the raising of chickens we have two hens....this will be our first winter was wondering how you all protect them from the weather. Our is in a coop...I attached a picture

The Coop looks good for two hens!

They can go into the coop when it rains and the run has a cover so they can stay fairly dry in the rain.

Cold in the winter is not a problem for Yuba City. It will not get cold enough to hurt them. Rain is not good for them but they can get wet as long as they can dry out in the coop at night.

The Heat is a bigger problem so start researching mist systems an other ways to keep them cool in the summer. Chickens die when it gets over 105.

I'm tickled we only lost like 2 chickens this past summer. We had some spikes of like 112+ - tough chickens! :D

Good Job!

I do not have hundreds but did not lose any to the heat. Our high was 108 in Woodland.

A Marans Breeder in Red Bluff lost something like 17 in on day to the heat.

Out of 16 eggs I set (chicken) - 1 was fertile. 1. One. Uno. ONE??!!!!  GAH! What in the world??? It was THE one egg from my favorite hen. She is an EE, that lays dark brown eggs with brown speckles. Covered by a CL roo. ONE egg. Dude. Somebody better go broody in the next 2 weeks! I saw it doing flippy doodles, there is no way I can destory a baby Dumpling (hen's name). I only set one of hers thinking - no way would hers be fertilized.

I set about 8 bantam (4 diff hens) eggs- that means my bantam roo is NOT doing his job. At all. And the rest were large fowl chicken eggs from about 6 other hens, covered by my CL boys (still young yet, not even 7 months old). They are mating, or attempting too. Mostly it looks like a WWF match with the roosters losing. :P

Anyone ever have that happen? ONE egg? :\

I just set 14 Silver Appleyard eggs. I need to test their hatchability. I am SO hoping I can sell these babies off once they hatch. I do not want to brood anything right now. lol

Did I mention ONE egg? Rooster fail!
Amy, meet Hans, my solo chick. I was fortunate to have a broody to raise him.

Yeah, sometimes they just all molt at once.
I was mostly just talking about nice big eating eggs (and the ones I sell).

Still...Dang! Speaking of selling eggs...next time Beakface goes broody or whenever I get another proven broody girl I was hoping I could just get some NH eggs from you and save myself the quarantine hassles. Keeping in mind that could be any time between now and a year from now...unless I get my Brinsea before then.

Welcome! Like others said earlier heat will to harder on the girls than the cold. If they are really cold mine hang out in the coop after eating.

Quote: Actually it's my NH that are the only ones still laying, but right now it's just all pullet eggs from my new girls I raised this year. I also haven't test hatched any of them, so I don't know if they are fertile. Can't say I've paid attention to the yolk when I've cracked them into a pan, but they are still pretty small.
