California - Northern

Thanks Chiquita and Ron! I'm leaning towards keeping them with the JG's because the JG's roost close to the ground and are a docile bird. The bantams will easily get to the higher level roosts and nests. We're going to the ranch of a local 4H Poultry leader tomorrow. He has quite a collection, so we'll see what strikes my daughters' fancy. I'll post pics.

Take care and thanks again!

if you have not picked them out yet, stay away from polish and silkies for mixed flocks( silkies also can often not see for showmanship I have been told and might refuse to walk) . Vaulted sculls make a bird very vulnerable to brain swelling after a slight peck on the crest. Seremas, while small, will mix well with larger birds IF your coop stays warm enough for them, or they have heat. OEGB are also supposed to be good mixers. And thats all I know!

Hi All! We will be getting 4 Bantam show birds tomorrow for 4H. They are already experienced birds. I currently have two large coops, one with 6month old layers and one with 4 month old Jersey Giant Pullets and two Roos. Both flocks have been friendly to new birds previously. I have no experience with Bantams, so my question is this: once the initial introduction from a dog kennel in the coop, can I safely keep the Bantams with the larger chickens?

Where's the show?

those are all good choices for mixed flocks from what I know, as long as your LF are not aggressive.

I have never tried showing or showmanship, but I was curious about it, so I explored :). I know some people LOVE showing silkies, and they are a popular choice for showmanship, but I have heard the complaint several times from judges and 4h mums.

we are going to see enders game tonight! Otherwise My husband was going to drag my mother this weekend, would NOT have been pretty!

Chiquita, I didn't know that about silkies. I was told he had some OEGB's and Bantam RIR'S and Bantam Leghorns. All show quality.
My daughter has used her OEGB and done well with her in showmanship. Our OEGB's think they are people and will fly up on my shoulders when I'm in the run doing chores, constantly talking in my ear. Cocks will need to be dubbed if they are shown after the first year. We haven't seen any RIR's or Leghorns up here.

It all depends on how devoted they are about showing but trying to keep bantams in show condition when they run with LF can be really tough. Someone will always have a broken feather right before the show. We have to move the bantams out 3 or 4 months before fair if they are used for conformation.

I remember watching Captain Kangaroo, To Tell the Truth, Red Skelton, I Love Lucy, The Dick Van Dyke Show, etc. Good old days TV programming!

OMG, you really must be as old as me! Or maybe close.

I don't want to be a pain but really would like your thoughts on these two questions.
And the questions didn't show up??? I think that it's difficult to give you advice in this situation because every flock pecking order & dynamics can be so different. You can try it but watch very closely to make changes right away if it doesn't work out. I used to have broodies that would fight to the death to protect their chicks, but the ones lately are not so aggressive. So, I tend to be cautious and not put small chicks in with older chickens. Once they are feathered out, they seem to be old enough to hide.

Went trick or treating with a couple of my grandkids in downtown Davis today. Thought I would share a pic of one of the bookstore employees. Check out the feet.

That is a great costume!

I'm probably older than you! Want to share birth years?! I'll give you a hint and tell you that I just made it into the baby boomer category!

Great costume! I wish that I had thought of that for feet when I was sewing chicken costumes for a theatre production of Charlotte's Web a few years ago!
