California - Northern

The high today was only 33F. The 3-4 inches of snow we got is melted out of the coop-run and we put some straw down in the run to keep the mud at bay and to make it warmer on their feet.

We have an auto waterer, but it's supply was the lake pump and that gets taken out every winter so it doesn't freeze and explode. So, the chickens have been back to their plastic tube waterer. Even with it inside the coop at night, it's still freezing.

Do you know where we can get a heated waterer? I found something like this at work.... would it work if I wrapped it around the waterer?

That might work.

I was thinking of something like this:

lol have you priced extension cords lately lol.
all 4 of my runs are at least 60 feet to 75 feet from the house.
I bought a Generator Friday night and figured I should my 2 more 50 cords and a splitter
it was 90.00 for just the extension cords lol
luckily I already have 3 or I would of spent a lot more

That would be crazy. We are lucky we live in a place where it does not often get this cold.

Worried most about taking away the light if they've gotten used to it. We had never planned on putting one up, but since it's there now I'm concerned about them being dependent on it for heat. Or do you think since it's only a regular light bulb that it isn't putting out enough heat to make them depended on it?

I think they will be fine. The light bulb will not give them much heat but 24 hours of light a day is supposed to make them stop laying eggs.

or if anything get a smaller 75 watt plant light. it does not put out near as much heat. it is a white light but its full spectrum so it will not cause issues. I use it in the house on my chicks then use the red 250 watt light outside in the brooders

Ill have showgirls. At some point I will stop having the hard feathered ones when flame stops giving me surprise chicks, lol. IM not sure what my silkie pens will look like next year, I have a VERY nice blue showgirl roo coming up, and a clean necked white roo and of course flame. nOT SURE WHO ELSE WILL MAKE THE CUT. ( opps kitten caps)

I would be interested in the regular feathered type if you have any hatch :) No roosters allowed where I live but I have 2 stealth Serama cockerels lol

Sharing the pain with all dealing with cold. This morning we were at 6° and got up to a balmy 24°. Took me 2 hours to get everyone water this morning since the snow is hanging around, all six inches still here. Supposed to be about the same tonight but may get above freezing tomorrow. I won't be complaining about the rain for awhile now!

I hope we get through this cold spell soon!

Ok. I have 2 grow outs that are not yet showing boyish tendacies. Are you going to stockton? I'll be able to bring them there.

If I breed Lucy to flame I could get some Partridge smooth feathers that also lay blue eggs. I'm thinking there could be a market for blue egg laying showgirls and silkies!

I'm sorry it's that cold for you ( unless you like it) our house has been in the 40 inside. The great room can only be warmed up with the fireplace and we are having spare the air days. So unless I can stay in the office or my bedroom it's gloves and 3 sweaters in here till it gets to a reasonable temperature.

I need to remember how wonderful the house is when its 100 outside and it is 60 in here and my chickens are lounging in their cool coop..
