Oh I am a mush mush. AH! So I was so set on keeping Samson (BCM cockerel). But tonight I picked up Copper (same age cockerel but isn't 'the chosen one' to be kept) I held him and pet his neck and he relaxed his neck and let it go kinda floppy and closed his eyes when I pet him. He seemed to like it a lot. I think he knows he was labeled for the cook pot. He is showing a bigger sweetness than Samson and sweetness is something I want bred into our birds. These guys are smart!

Yes!

23 are going into lockdown.

13 EO Marraduna Basque(no surprise there)
8 Pita Pintas
2 Pennes

Disapointed about the Pennes but I have heard they are tough. I eggtopsied(cracked open) the most promising clear looking one and there was only yellow.

I hope they both hatch.

Candling shows mostly an air cell and a dark mass. I did see veins and some movement in some. This is what the camera saw:

I feel ya. Looks like I only have 2 as well....

Everyone in my flock is a different color and breed (except 2 EEs).
today's big excitement: a whole green bean vine, which had been knocked off its roots & was wilting fast -- i opened up the pods & the girls chased each other wildly to grab the beans, then ate the pods, then ate the leaves, then pecked and tugged at the vine itself. hugely popular -- wish i'd brought my camera!

and the two marans pullets, who were so crazily skittish when i first got them, both jumped up in my lap for a minute or two, looking for additional treats -- i seem to have made friends!

still new to this chicken thing and delighted by them,
laura
Well, if "music soothes the savage beast" (or breast, if you're literary), then treats tame the crazy chicken!

Thanks, there's about 20 of them in the pen to the left, besides that one pullet. I have two other pens full of Goldens as well, I seriously need to get in there and start culling cockerels.

Very much so. With all this heat we've had, the BCM's, the NH's and all my other big breeds having been panting. Not a single sign of distress from the Lak's.

Oh la la! Will show hubby! It's more fun picking together with him. :D

I am really interested in trying this out. Going to order it this weekend (payday). Will let you all know how it goes. Filling up 4 waterers daily is annoying. I don't know how often others do it but I like to keep the water fresh and cool- and avoid the slimy build up the water tray always gets. Not having to wash waterers, hauling little buckets in and out of the coop all the time really appeals to me!

I have been meaning to take some pictures of my coop set up. I use the nipple waterers with a bucket gravity system and a $10 float valve from TSC. The bucket was free. I had the PVC and glue on hand. cost of the nipples which I use for about 120 chickens right now was $48. If I bought the pipe and glue, say $15. Oh, and roughly $5 for some silicon sealant. I do a rough visual check every time I feed just to make sure it's working but in three months I have only had 2 "maintenance" type issues. So my waterer which I do virtually nothing for cost me around $80. great deal for no stress. I'm gonna add an inline filter like a drip system has just to make sure i don't get any clogs and I drain the system and flush it every month or so just to be sure all's well. works great for me. If you want to come by and check it out any time, just let me know! sometimes, there are some nipples that tend to leak and I actually built in the end to leak a bit so the chickens have access to a bucket of water which is outside the coop and stays relatively full and clean since new water is slowly dripping in all day.

Oh no!! That's a big decision.

Your water system sound just like what I need to make:) do you have a picture?
I need to start making my life a little easier.... I spend so much time feeding, watering and cleaning... I really need to simplify.:). Molly

I will try to take some pictures tomorrow. I need to take some pictures of the chickens anyway as my SFHs, CLs, EEs, BLRWs, and Silver Spangled Hamburgs are all just starting to lay!!! Getting exciting for onslaught of eggs and getting these guys separated into their breeding pens! I'll post some tomorrow.

Quote: Hey meghan,

I may be interested in a few of your basques if you hatch more than expected or wanted via Ron. my flock pretty much was decimated by my critter break in a month or so ago. It looks like I'm down to two roos and a pullet. I am getting some replacement chicks from GFF from another issue tomorrow and she may have sent some basques in the order, not sure yet. but let me know if you are planning on keeping all your chicks or if they are spoken for elsewhere. Thanks!
