I will post and see.

Make sure you do not use a metal water bucket with the vinegar.

I hope he recovers!

You can also give them save a chick pro biotics. Also, get some chick grit--its smaller than regular grit--and watch about giving them grains until they are older. The little EEs have not had grains and would definitely need grit if you gave them some. Chickens do not have teeth, so they need the rocks to grind up the grains. Flock raiser does not need the grit for them to digest it.

Reading the above paragraph make me wonder why I am writing in such an obtuse manner today. Too lazy to change it, so I hope it makes sense....

Picked up a little giant and turner today! Super excited!!
Now just have to dial this thing in and then I'm gonna be orderin some Basque hen eggs!!!
Any tips for a newbie bator??
I've heard the "dry incubation" method has a high success rate. Has anybody tried this method??
Congratulations!! I bought the same one a couple of weeks ago. Make sure to get a good thermometer/hygrometer for it (I use a digital AcuRite..about $10). Is your the 9200 model or did you get the forced air fan? If the box says the model number is 9200 than it's a still air so dry incubating could be a good option. I added the forced air fan to mine and am still doing a dry incubation with some quail eggs. This is my first hatch and, since they're quails for someone else, I'm not too worried about them.. when I incubate rare chicken eggs I will be a freak about it! LOL. What's your email address? I can send you the hatching advice Ron was talking about.

I will have some Marraduna Basque eggs in a month or so if you're interested. Ron and I believe another person (PapaBrooder?) has them too.

Hey everyone, sorry I was gone. Anybody else been watching the Olympics?

Anyways, my month and a half old BBR OEGB chick is crowing.

It's hilarious! "E-E-eeeeee"

Grr and I saw the bobcat the other day... watching a couple feet from behind the fence. Poor chickens couldn't go outside on a nice day.

I hope I didn't miss anything.
Welcome back! Crowing at 1 1/2 months? Wow I didn't know some roo's start that early on!
Eek, another bobcat or do you think it's the same one?

i too had a busy weekend and can't keep up with everything here! (and no tv reception, so no olympics, even!)

only chicken news here is my little flock keeps growing, they are at approx. nine weeks -- the two silver pencils chase all the others mercilessly, but the two cuckoo marans have discovered that they can fly better than the pencils -- so they take refuse on a high roost in the run, or, if i'm around, on my shoulder. given how crazily skittish they were when i first got them, i find this solution rather amusing.

Amy, much sympathy for the loss of your dog, i've gone through similar with my cats -- and hope you can find a new addition to your family soon!

best,
laura
We got rid of our cable a couple of months ago and now only have Netflix and Hulu. It's amazing how much money you can save by not having a million channels!

My SPPR's are very active as well and either run around chasing the others or run around being chased. They seem to have they're own "click" and always hang out with each other. They are really quick and hard to catch but once you have them in your arms they calm down immediately. The biggest one I named Large Marge and she is sooo loud when she gets mad or scared. She sounds like a honking goose!

Ah, there's always chicken TV right? Powered by scratch and grains.
That's the kind of tv I love now! We spend so much time outside now with all of our animals! My boyfriend hates the Olympics (don't ask) and so this is our entertainment! :-)

We cleaned out his crop. I have the Chicken Health Book. I then You Tubed the procedure. My husband and I watched it. Then did the procedure. Wow that was intense. We trimmed feathers, slit the neck and crop open with a tiny incision - then using scissor looking tweezers we grabbed what we could. It was FULL of flock raiser and oat hulls. We didn't come across anything else though- no grass or string or anything. Maybe sour crop? It smelled like buttermilk- sour. Then we made a solution of tepid water and anti-biotics and flushed the crop out and the surrounding area. We haven't sewn the incision. No where did I read that you should do that. Maybe you should - I don't know. But my mil is getting some Vetricyn spray right now from TS so I can apply that several times a day. I put fresh water in with him and it has electrolytes and probiotics in it. And we wait...I think by tonight I should offer him food- but I read it should be moistened.

If anyone has anything else to add, suggestions we are open. I told Copper if he pulled through he has a forever home with us. He is one tough chicken. He just let us do all this. He is amazing!
I can not believe you had the courage to do minor surgery on him! GOOD FOR YOU!!!!!!!! Please keep us updated. I really hope Copper is ok!

When I was trying to post the picture of the book info I couldn't post. I tried a couple of times. The only way it worked was to go on the Tapatalk app (the app you can post pics from to BYC). It seems to be working now though.

Oooh Central and Northern Ca people!!! I'm in the Sacramento area (Rocklin to be specific) Nice to talk with others in the same basic area!

I picked up my Spanish chicks yesterday from Ron. He did such an amazing job hatching them and got a great hatching rate!
jumpy.gif

I picked up 10 Marraduna Basques and 6 Pita Pintas. Both are from the Basque region in Spain.
Two of my Basques were special needs. The one that was trying to hatch upside down died last night. Ron and I both figured he wasn't going to make it. I have one more special needs chick left. She flops around on her back and can't stand up. She has a normal amount of energy but just can't seem to stand up. I'm giving her some baby vitamins that were recommended to me, as well as both save-a-chick packages and vinegar in her water. We've nicknamed her/him Pinkman because she has two pink leg bands on. She's trying so hard, I hope she makes it!
I took individual pictures of my little guys today (everyone but Pinkman). They all have leg bands now so I can track their progress. They are so fast it's nice to be able to tell them apart by the colored bands! So without further ado, please meet my new little loves:
Basques:
EO Black (this one is the biggest and fluffiest of all of the Basques!):

EO Blue:

EO Brown:

EO Green:

EO Orange (This one is an escape artist!!):

EO Pink (this little guy made it so hard to get a picture of him standing still!):

EO Purple:

EO Red:

Now for the Pita Pinta's!!:
PP Blue

PP Green:

PP Orange:

PP Pink:

PP Red:

PP White:

my cream legbars have started to lay!!! at least 3 of these are CL eggs. They are actually blue though they look green in this picture. the top egg was a first egg from one of my girls, so big compared to all the other firsts. I'm gonna have to incubate from her in a week or two! so excited

Welcome to the thread!! I'm in Concord (East Bay). What kind of chickens do you have?

I have a Blue Silkie, a Smooth Splash Sizzle, a Buff Orpington, a Buff Plymouth Rock, a bantam Buff Laced Polish, and a bantam Columbian Cochin. My girls are looking for call ducks too if anyone knows any one in the area who has some. They do 4H and want to try call ducks :)
