Crows are scary smart. We have a walnut tree in front of our house. The crows pick the walnuts, fly them over the road and drop them on the street then wait for the cars to run them over and crack them. Brilliant. This has been going on for generations.

Years ago, a resident crow would scream "mama" from the trees. The first few times I heard it I was a little creaped out.

A friend posted this on FB this morning. It is worth a watch. Talk about a smart bird! I wonder if my resident scrub jay could do this?

Very smart bird!

The family I loaned my incubator to was asking about unwanted roosters for meat birds. She lives in Modesto & her daughter has a poultry project going for 4H. You may have met her at the lunch table at Stockton.
I live in Modesto - we've repeatedly sold birds for meat. I think one just has to be patient. If your friend wants she can get on my waiting list. At the moment we are sold out but getting ready to set a very large (for us) hatch batch.

1. What keeps the mat from lifting up when the hens scratch around before laying?
2. Why did you mention using golf balls in responding to eggs getting scratched?
1. It's pretty heavy
2. Golf balls distract them plus they do not like the feel of them when their beaks touch them

I am designing some breeder/brooder cages. Planning on keeping breeder Ro's full time in there with 1, 2 or 3 hens. How does 8' deep x 4' wide sound? Or 8' deep by 5'? Height would be 6'.
