California - Northern

Last night I went to Home Depot to get supplies to repair the irrigation system that feeds the raised beds and orchard. I walked by the tool aisles like any guy and couldn't help but buy some brand new Dewalt goodies. Impact, Drill, Radial Arm Saw etc. Well, as I was getting ready to pay the gal, I thought, I think it's time to treat my chooks with some new stuff. Grabbed some supplies, came home and made this unit. I built this whole unit for the price of one commercially made 4 section nest box. And today it is time to build a 45 degree double tier ladder style roost in the coop. They will love this stuff...well, they better haha.

Very nice! Your girls must be very spoiled!

I'm not sure I have a scale that would weight that precisely.  Would a food scale work?  I also wondered about weighing eggs to check for appropriate humidity in the bator.  Does all that opening and closing cause problems.  I. seems like you would have to do it often

I use a food scale in grams that has .1 I think. You weigh once a week.

The chicks are now 3 1/2 weeks old. I'm thinking both of the Orphingtons are boys. I've never had Orphingtons before, so I have nothing to compare them to.

The Silkies have feathered out way more than the Orphingtons. The Frizzled ones look pretty weird though.

I see 2 frizzles? The black and the barred? Beautiful!

Yep. I ended up with 2 fizzles out of the bunch. Their feathering is different though. The orange-ish and black one looks like regular feathers that curl up. The black ones has feathers that kind of stick together and look like huge eyelashes. I hope they are both girls. They are to pretty to have for dinner. ;)

Eeewwww!  Those are pretty gross!!!  I have ordered from Ebay twice and the eggs were packed very well both times.    I was sure to check feedback to see how they were received by others.  But that was before I knew about BYC.   The Mottled AM project eggs I just got were shipped in a carton, but each was wrapped separately before putting in the hole.  The whole think was packed in a box with lots of padding and then put in aanother box with lots of padding  There was one cracked egg that was in a corner (and it was pretty badly cracked) but the rest seem fine and most are developing.  The Marans and OE I had shipped were very well packed  with each egg in bubble wrap and lots of packing peanuts around them.  I received 18 eggs in that shipment and they all arrived intact.
Yay! :)

I am confused . . I thought they were called Sizzles when frizzles were crossed with Silkies and the ones that have smooth feathers are smooth Sizzles. I want some! Adorable!! :love     What do you get when you cross a Silkie with a Sizzle that has the curly feathers?

I'm not sure of the "correct" terms for them. I got the eggs from Papa brooder. From what I understand they need one "frizzle gene" to have the frizzled feathers. If they get 2 "frizzled genes" they look weird. Papa Brooder has frizzled roosters in with Silkie hens to get this mix (I think). His eggs have a great mix of colors.

I get all the zzle nanes confused. So you are probaly right.

Those are silkies with 1 non expressed hookless gene (probably a few dont have that) and the frizzled feather gene.

Those boys are often easy to find homes for since they look so outrageous.
