California - Northern

Ok I have a few pips in shells. I hear chirping.
Since I have duck eggs going on due March 1, i don't lower the temp right?
Humidity is at 60%.
I do have a question on temp:
I have trusted my Brinsea Advance EX for the temp.
BUT I found an old Brinsea Spot Check (about 10+ years old) didn't realize I had one.
The spot check kind of had the temps all over the place. It varied a bit , but I thought that with a fan incubator the temp would be the same throughout.
LIke some spots were in the high 98's and higher up 100.4 . I'm trusting my new incubator more than this old spot check, but was surprised.

I would only worry about takung temps down if you are going to hold it at 70% humidity or more. Dont think you will need to on the home grown eggs bet airflow is good.
:idunno I put the eggs under my aunt's broody hen the afternoon of the last Tuesday in January (the 25th)  Conservatively that makes this Tuesday day 21 and today Day 19.   I have the two Bantam eggs here in the incubator in my house and left the LF eggs under the broody.   I went down today expecting to see her pancaked on those eggs but instead she was out scratching and have a constitutional.   Should I be worried about the 3 remaining eggs she has or is day 18  more of a guideline for those hatching with an incubator than it is for a broody???

I think they sit strong when they here peeping.

I'm going to go check if that one is still alive

poor thing.
Just catching up on everything. I'm so sorry - chicks dying is traumatic. When we brought home those sick chicks from the hatchers we had a terrible time. I hated it. You have my heartfelt sympathy!

well now this is new: a PURPLE-colored egg today, and absolutely no idea who might have laid it -- coming from a pen with marans, silver-pencilled rocks, and amelias. best guess is that one of the older marans is just finally getting started laying again (after a long winter hiatus), and her color is off -- but truly mystified!
Such pretty eggs! Love all the contrast

Now fro some happy news!

I am getting ready to set my first batch of UofA Blues eggs. I also have Crele Pene X UofA Blues Olive Egger eggs!

The Egg farmer is impressed with how well the Blues lay and how big the eggs are already. They are still pullets and have only been laying for a couple of months. The eggs are from 55 to 67G in size so Large eggs!

Who is laying all the big blue eggs? I'd love increase egg size of the blues.

They are Blue Egg Layered from the University of Arkansas.

They are a blue, black, Splash project created from Whiting Blues. Whiting is a fly tying company from Colorado. They are Araucana x Leghorn based.

@lawatt
I have one that lays eggs like that, but they always dry with a ring, like they'd been sitting in a puddle, even when collected with bloom still wet.

That blue is amazing!

the aqua-blue over on the right side is from my one araucana, definitely the weirdest (personality-wise) chicken i own -- very much a loner, and almost never lays her egg in the actual nestbox, but rather on the floor of the run in random places, where they often get crazily dirty and/or smashed -- but she's slowly slowly learning.

Well I am impressed. How ever do you find about all these obscure breeds? What fun

Take it easy!! I had the opposite problem, all my babies were way late. Hopefully you little one will stay in there until it's time.

So- an Update of my chicken code violation:

I went to the Citrus Heights City Council meeting last night. I was able to to stand up and give my little chicken presentation to the City Council. I made copies of my letter with my picture, and they were handed out to the council members, and put in the record. They told me that this was an issue that has come up before, and they weren't opposed to looking at changing the code. The put it on their calendar of items. After it was over the Head of code enforcement (who happened to be at the meeting) introduced himself, and we were able to have quite a long conversation about it. He received my email, and told me that technically at this point, (from his perspective) he has to follow the code until the city council tells him otherwise. He said he understands my position, and suggested that I find a temporary place for them until the re-inspection (that they are required to do) is done, and this kind of blows over. I told him that I would really like to avoid even temporarily re-homing them, and he said (kind of cryptically) to talk to Officer Leah Buck (the officer who originally wrote the violation), and see what we can work out. I really hope the City Council makes it a priority.

On a happier note,
I got my eggs from Papa Brooder this morning, and they are in the 'bator. So I have 6 (of my own eggs), on day 12, and 4 Lavender Orp, 4 Lemon Cuckoo Orp, and 28 Silkie/Sizzle/Frizzle eggs that just went it.

That's good news! Remember to check back with Planning or the City Clerk to find out when the Code will be addressed. The Code Enforcement Officer may also know. That way you help keep it in the forefront.... Keep us posted!!
