it has been so hot.... My air conditioning went out in my car yesterday. I was stuck in traffic. That is when I truly realized how hot it was.

for what it's worth, the fog finally made it in to Petaluma/Santa Rosa last night, i'm in the sun here on the mtn but it's all foggy down below -- so the temps should be gradually coming down again...

i've got no A/C at home, so will be glad for cooler air!

I used to love that little area between Petaluma ( where I lived for 3 years ) and Cotati or Penngrove on 101 where the hill was. seemed like there was always fog there at night in the summer. so refreshing....

I hear ya. my little Civic has been without Ac all Summer

I drive 62 miles one way to work and back and they are doing road work on highway 88 now so sometimes I have to sit for 15 minutes while the road is blocked...

lost my first bird to the heat today. it's been a long time since i got sad about losing a bird. This one made me quite sad.

Neat happenings this weekend.

Yesterday I finally got enough eggs together to throw in the incubator and see if it was just shipped eggs not hatching or user error.
I will put more in today once they lay. and a big thank you to my dog for leaving these alone...
I think it was just the weather when I got them but we will see. so I am hatching Icelandic's and olive eggers and easter eggers over my rooster Curly.

I seperated my young Icelandic's and legbar x penedesenca/welsummer crosses and put them with my icelandics and olive egger /easter egger and ameraucana (I have 1 icelandic rooster and the rest are hens) I am rehoming the legbar crosses (1 male and one female)
2 of the 3 young icelandic are roosters so 1 will go I am keeping one do to the color he is white base with thousands of blue and black spots it seems or feathers. need to get a pic of him.

so now my young Crele Penedesenca breeding quad is on there own in the pen.. I can not tell you how excited I am about these ones.....
it was a challange to get these.

And to top it off yesterday I paid up on my breeding trio of White Empordanesa which I will get in a month once it cools down from probably one of the main breeders of them back east.
I may get more crele's from here too but it is spendy for me so we shall have to see.

The two girls that I had to bring in the house yesterday, seemed to recover completely. I put them back into the coop about an hour before sundown. They both immediately started to eat, and at lockup time, were in the coop and up on a roost.

I came SO close to losing them. They are only HQ and in my egg flock, but they are Molly & Susie! Susie even laid an egg while in the bathtub yesterday. Her nickname is "Chicken Chicken". When she was little and the other birds would pick on her, she'd run to me for protection.

When I do my hourly check and spray down of the runs, I hadn't been spraying the run of the egg house. Their run has a solid roof over the whole thing and the coop/run is built right into the heavily leaved branches of a huge mulberry tree. They are always in deep shade, so I normally just check them and their water supply. Now I need to add that run to my spray down routine.

Amy Beth, I'm sorry you're having such a tough time. You've worked so hard to make a good home for your chickens and purchased from a reputable breeder. You did everything right. I hope you can figure this out and get back to just enjoying your chickens.

You people talking about the fog

110 here yesterday. I have a thermometer that says how many dogs you need to have with you in the igloo to stay warm, according to the temperature. It got to Dead Dog yesterday.

Lost another Delaware hen. The Dork cockerels were all hot but ok and they are right next to the Delaware coop, have less shade and don't get their run hosed down. My pigs were happy to get chicken dinner again.

I am really grumpy and wishing I lived in Oregon.

I cooked the Delaware Roo you gave me I have a Basque chicken recipe that uses onions, roasted bell peppers, Garlic, tomatoes and smokey paprika. I usually braise the chicken and the recipe calls for chicken breast but this time I pressure cooked the cut up chicken(boy that was a chore!). I put it under pressure for 20 min. then popped the top and added the tomatoes and bell pettper. I the pressure cooked for another 20 minutes.

It was so good!

The thigh meat was like a chuck roast in texture but tasted more like a pheasant.

You can cook a 6 month old roo, if you pressure cook it!
