I agree with Jeremy that she looks like a pullet. Besides the comb, you can look at the color of her tail feathers. Cockerels have barred (striped) tail feathers. Pullets should have black edged with white. It looks like she has black & white tail feathers, rather than barred.

On Friday we hiked to Stoney Creek Falls. This was the third time in two years trying to find it. This time we talked to a Ranger. The Falls are on the Middle fork of Stony Creek in the Snow Mountain Wilderness Area. It is in the Mendocino National Forest and is at about 5000 feet in elevation.

It took four hours to drive there, but it took only three hours to drive home. Having a map and good directions makes a big difference! The hike took 2 hours there and 2 hours back. Even though it is supposed to be a Moderate hike, it was pretty hard on me.

We could not get down to the falls. The path ended at a drop off the was nearly a cliff. We would have needed ropes to get down there. I did get some pictures though.

This is the creek after the falls. This is 1.3 miles into the hike. We then had to hike another mile to get to the falls:

This is the Waterfall:

Maybe next year I will take some repelling gear and get down to the base of the Fall.

I hope this helps you all feel a bit cooler today in the heat.

Looks beautiful! Was it you that posted pics of ladybugs coming out of hibernation last spring? Same place?

It is the same area. The Ladybugs are on the South Fork of Stony Creek. It is much easier to get there than the Falls on the middle fork. We did not see another person or even a car from turning off at Elk Creek to coming back. That was about 6 hours of no one but us!

We did see three Black Angus Heifers though...and as the sun was going down on us a bunch of mosquitoes made me their dinner.

When we passed through Elk Creek on the way to Willows and I-5, I saw a sign that said, if I went straight instead of turning, that it was 67 miles to Covelo.

I have taken that trip and it is quite wild too.

It is great to hear from you!

What breeds do you have?

Ron

Thanks!! My rooster is a Shamo, the hens are mixed breeds. Some Easter Eggers, some French Black copper Marans, a pair of red sexlinks, a 'barred leghorn' mutt, a CornishX meat project, an Australorp and some mixed breed hatchlings.

I also forgot to mention the StripeyChickens. A Barred Rock and little Barred Dominique complete the flock. I won't mention the other species right now.:D
