Looking forward to being overrun with Orp chicks this weekend!

Out of 30 eggs set, 7 were infertile (no development at all), and 2 were early quitters (blood ring).
Lockdown is tomorrow night - I hope all 21 make it all the way.

Welll...I learned something new today. We have had hawks in the nieghbothood in past years but I have not seen any for the last few. I have, however, noticed an increase in the number of crows wround here I never made the connection between the two. The crows spend lots of time up high in the very tall pine trees squawking thier heads off. Sometimes they are so loud I hear them when I am indoors with the TV on. I always have to go outside and watch them for a bit. It is like they are having a very loud party up there. I will definitley have a new-found appreciation for them!

Now if I could just find some redeeming qualities in the Scrub Jays we also have in abundance!

NEW THOUGHT FOR ME TOO...........We have thousands of crows every evening in the orchard next door. What a noise they make. Didn't know they deterred hawks.....I thought that was ravens & we see very few of those but they are around.

My 12 yr old daughter wants Mille Fleur D-uccles, too. Maybe once your son has his breeding program up and running, we can get some eggs or chicks. I'm not going to say anything to Monet about it because it already is hard enough making her wait. We need to move some chickens out and make a place for them before we bring any bantams in. It is hard to say no when she sees them at the shows and gives me that look that says, Pleeeeease???
Jules from Madera, the one I told you I was inviting along for lunch is the one with the Du'ccles. Better watch Monet around her.....LOL
Glad to see you back I will know to watch out for Mondays from now on.

Mondays are a blur for me. It is our homeschool co-op day and we leave the house at 10 and don't get back until around 5. I teach a middle school/high school physical science class as well as 2 different drama classes. Then we go to the farm to check on chickens after co-op since we are only 2 miles from the farm. I come home and sleep on the couch while The Voice is on!

That's sad that Aaron lost one of his new birds. Maybe he needs some crows at his house!

Me too!!!! I have about 18 that are still in the 'bator of about 23 set. I just pulled out 4 clear ones this morning. Interestingly the biggest of the Marans eggs were the ones that are clear. One of the 4 had the tiniest bloody spot and the rest were completely clear. The one I pulled last week was also a big Marans egg ans was also clear.

X3 Remember about this time last year when the FDA cleared it for poultry growers in the US to ship their live chickens to China to be processed and shipped BACK to us with no labeling restrictions...

That's why I have a couple of home grown cockerels in the freezer.
Talking about processing our own birds, my farm friend has set Sat 4/5 for processing. She is opening it up to a few more people who have some of their own birds to process and want to learn how to do it. They live out in the country east of Brentwood. The limit is 5 of your own birds. If you are interested, pm me!

How are your eggs from Boggy Bottom Bantams doing?  I just ordered 2 dozen and they ship today. :ya        He is sending 11 chocolate (dun) mottled, 9 porcelain and 4 mille fleur.
I need to take another peek soon but when I checked on the 23rd only 3 clears and 1 early quitter. There's another one that I'm not sure about.. 8 think 14 of the 18 is pretty good for shipped. Eight more days...eternity.

I would love to go if I was closer! I have been watching lots of videos on the subject and think when the time comes I will be able to do it.. I still think that first one will be tough though....
I will be processing two this weekend. It will make things more peaceful here.

My Oldest DD said Woo Hoo! Chicken dinner! Leave the skin on!
