Well shoot, now my Polish girl kicked one out! The shell is crushed the chick is still alive! I wet the membrane then wrapped it and covered in a wet towel. Broody is off the nest, two more pipping. No incubator, what do I do??? Had to catch the darn bird to get her back on the nest! I put the broken egg back in the nest because it was getting cold.

Oh, how sad.

Wish I had some useful advice for you, but my experience with hatching chicks was handled exclusively by the barnyard hens.

How close is it to being "done"? Can you put it on a heating pad and keep it moist??

Hope you are getting some relief from the smoke and the heat today. We are a bit overcast and cooler today.

oh, good luck with the not-quite hatched chick!!

i have another question for you more-experienced-with-chickens folks: since yesterday afternoon, my 11-12 week old Delaware pullet has been acting oddly quiet/moody/sluggish -- she's still eating and drinking, but spends most of her time roosting on a favorite branch or settled down in a corner of the run, and didn't join her flockmates when i let them out for some free-ranging this afternoon. her eyes are clear, and she doesn't seem ill in any way -- just super-quiet.

they all get unfiltered apple cider in their water regularly, which i changed out for fresh this morning, as well as plain yogurt 3-4 times a week -- and it's actually cooler today here than in a long time, only in the high 70s or so -- so i'm a bit mystified? should i just keep an eye on her & hope that she perks up?

thanks in advance for any thoughts you might have?

! I usually open the store on Tuesdays (even though we don't open on Tuesday in the summer) but it's so hot and smokey no one wants to come out so I didn't bother going in.

Thank you for the warning!!! Something to think about here, most definitely.
I gave away a SQ Silkie pair (bearded lav/partridge splits) earlier this year for just that reason-- the HEAT. I was so afraid for the poor birds, they are doing fine in their new home now and I'm still hatching from the rooster. I'm not really up for giving out special treatments for non-tolerant birds, but I do notice that if they make it through the first summer they seem to adapt, generally speaking. Had a trio of FBCMs last year that were really suffering and even though it's hotter this year they are doing just fine.


Here's Abner last fall when he was a chickie.... I have resorted to hooking my phone up to the computer and STILL no luck! I suppose I'll have to pull them off my phone first... but, its a start!

and whoops, i typed too soon -- went down to check on her and now her right leg doesn't seem to be working properly, she was limping badly when she tried to walk & then settled half-lying down on her right side. i've brought her indoors to the empty brooder i'd set up for the new chicks (arriving tomorrow), and given her some fresh water, but not sure what else to do?

Well, she has a few days of different gestation because she let the other hens lay in there before I figured it out, but there are two others pipping so could be close. I stuck it back in the nest because it was getting cold but I don't know if mom will keep enough moisture to keep it from shrink wrapping or if I should take it out. Anyone?

Don't know if this will help, but in a biology class we looked at embryos of different gestations while they were still in the egg. Instructor cut large windows in the shells and covered them with plastic wrap (not the entire egg; maybe use tape to hold in place?). Don't know how long they can last this way, but all of his were alive for at least 24 hours.

Laura, I have a pullet that had a bad limp for about a month, but it got better and she's fine now. Spent a lot of time lying down, trying to keep it a secret.

Don't want to freak you out or anything, but I've read that Maerks (sp??) can result in leg paralysis on one side. I would think that would look different than a limp, but have never dealt with it.

Someone here will know!

Well of course! It's like when you take your car the the mechanic, and the mysterious noise stops as soon as you pull in!

Still, to be on the safe side, I would keep her separate at least for tonight and see how she is in the morning. Don't you have new babies coming? Probably nothing serious, but better safe than sorry.

yes, new babies arriving by mail tomorrow -- so i'll keep her in the bathroom brooder box for now. still standing/walking, but mostly just standing still, very quiet, occasionally closing her eyes. poops appear to be yellowish and very watery.
