I am not sure if it works for scaly leg mites. I think they need to be suffocated with oil on the legs and the whole coop cleaned and sprayed with mite killer. But here is a great article for you to read about using IVOMEC to worm your chickens and kill mites and lice that is on Linda's website Sweetwater Poultry.

Shut the front door! It looks much more likely than bumble foot actually (and much nicer to get rid of). It's not on the bottom of the feet which makes sense it were leg mites. I was going to treat them with Ivermectin anyyyyyway- shouldn't this take care of it then? None of my chickens are laying yet anyway...

Foop! (made up word lol) Someone here said to dose the birds to put a drop on their neck and one under each wing? I have the pour on stuff. I prefer to hand apply rather than use it in their water supply.

Hi Amy,

You do not use pour on in the water. You have to use it on the bird.

I have not used pour on so you will have to find the dosage for your small chickens.

You can also use Frontline for Dogs, but I would use pour on Ivermectin if that is what you have.

The oil or vaseline may make the legs feel better but probably does not kill the mites. It is like an old wives remedy. Seriously, none of those suffocate ideas works for bugs, They Do Not Breath!

Oh gosh and speaking of worms (I totally took a pic if anyone wants to see it - I am happy to share my disgusting fascination). Bleck! My new puppy has round worm. The vet wormed her yesterday and last night she pooped a HUGE worm. It was about 5 inches. Oh. MY. GOOOOOSH. It was so creepy! That poor little puppy! She's had the squirties for 2 days and I have her on chicken and rice to help firm up the poo. If she doesn't stop shooting poo instead of laying down tootsie rolls I'm gonna have to put him on IVs for fluids. She was pooping normal at first but when I got her- I didn't know what food she was on so I think the food switch jacked her up to start with. Geezzzzz! Poor baby. But ever since she pooped that worm- she has been one alert puppy! She dove underneath the blankets last night and bit my hubs butt. haha! We are crate training right now- seems to be going ok. But I can;t let her cry it out at night when she has diarrhea. She shoots it everywhere. Nasty. But when she sleeps with us- she holds it. Nice. So as soon as I can get her laying logs again- I can let her cry it out in her crate and learn to go night night.

Do puppies NEED puppy food? I have Puppy Chow (we all know that's like mostly corn) and I have what my other dog was eating. Some pricey stuff- first ingredient is lamb and then it has some veggies and fruit. The kibbles are smaller than the puppy chow too. But it's not a 'puppy chow' type food. I am afraid to upset her tummy though.

For me it would be more work to catch all of my chickens to treat each one.

Right. I have the pour on (topical) kind and that is what I prefer to use. I was trying to recall the dosage. I read one place like 2 drops on the neck. But someone in here said like the neck and under each wing?

Using oil, petrolium jelly, etc. as part of the treatment for scaly leg mites is recommended by UC Davis. Here is that link.

In that case you will see that at the bottom of Linda's page on Health and worming how to use the pour on IVOCMEC. That is great that you have helpers!

Yes, they need puppy food, yes a high quality puppy food, no don't give her the adult dog food. Wait until you have what you are going to feed her so you don't mess with her tummy again. Her poo isn't dark red and stinky is it? No Parvo right?
