California - Northern

Thanks for the input on shipped eggs. I will of course see what I can find locally, and if I ever do get them shipped it's only going to be from someone with great feedback.

The hen with the broken leg is doing better... I decided not to splint it even though it was a really bad fracture and it already has a nice lump of calcium, so it no longer flops around.

I want to give 2 thumbs up for Vetericyn Ophthalmic Gel!!! I have a little Pita Pinta chick who hatched with a problem eye. It was hardly visible and looked to be retreating into its skull. I have been cleaning that side of the chick's head with warm water and then putting Vetericyn Ophthalmic Gel in its eye twice a day and today, it had the eye open! It still has a ways to go before the eye looks normal but it has gone from hardly being able to even see the eye ball to having it open with the eye ball visible! I love Vetericyn products!

What are the chances that eggs shipped from Pennsylvania with be viable?

-Kathy
I have had them hatch coming from NY............I don't count on a high hatch rate but enough for a start.

I often mix cayenne pepper powder in with the morning mash that I give my flock. I've gotten lazy since the sun comes up so much earlier and don't always give it to them but when I do it consists of layer pellets, water, plain yoghurt, kelp powder, alfalfa powder, milk thistle seed powder, cayenne powder, and some kind of shredded vegie (zucchini, kale, cucumber, etc.) or fruit (apple, berries, tomato, etc.). Sometimes I throw other things in there like chopped nuts, shredded coconut, flax seeds, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. Preparing it makes me feel like I'm working for a zoo!

OMG............................. Debi I fill like a slouch with the routine I use.....................LOL

Okay, so I'm researching incubating since my bator will be here on the 22nd, and it says that with a forced-air incubator, the temp should stay at 99.5 throughout incubation, but with a still air incubator it should be at 102. Is the Gensis 1588 w/ auto turner a forced air incubator, or a still air incubator? I was thinking forced air but obviously I might be wrong.

Had to make this a separate post since the pictures are on my phone...in addition to my last post, I have one more question..does this flashlight look bright enough for candling? This is with a white (unfertilized) egg.

How hot is germany? Karen if you can I would vacc your beibs fpr maraks. They are fragile to us versions of diseases and seem to die a lot.
That was a very funny moment! I was not gonna rat you out!!
I just dipped the eggs. It did not take writing off and it felt like there was still bloom. I think when you dip is crucial and how clean you keep the bator matters too. Im getting mildly obsessed with egg yplk infections since chrissys all got sick at 3 weeks and that was the root cause. Wth at 3 weeks????

Yes, lost all my jubilees to egg yolk sac infection. Absolutely horrible. They were 2 1/2 weeks and many were breathing funny. Fearing some sort of horrible disease I took them for necropsy. 4 of the 6 were severe egg yolk sac infection. The Dr said it can get so bad, it gets into their respiratory system. Lost 5 before that the first 48 hours. Which was also believed by the vet to be caused by the egg yolk sac infection. The good thing is it wasn't anything contagious. That helped blunt the blow. But now I'm wanting to use oxine on eggs as well to help prevent things like that

Oops see above. My first part of the post is at the top of your quote.I only lived in australia from 13 to 20. I swear in aussie on occation but I don't talk like one except every once in a while.

Dan actually asked me where your accent was. That's even better if you can go back and forth

The Genesis 1588 is a forced-air incubator.

It will come pre set- I would get a good thermometer and get it to 99.9 for the first 18 days. 98.5 to 99 is good for the last three days. The Humidity gauge in mine is 10% low. For incubation I fill one tank and it goes to 35% or so. I wait until it gets down to close to 20 before adding more water. For the last three days, I set the humidity to 65 to 70% and take the turner out. I hatch in egg cartons which is important for shipped eggs.

Feel free to ask questions!

That will work for white eggs. Marans, Penedesenca and some blue to olive eggs not so much....
