Happy Fathers Day as well to all the Dads out there

sorry to hear about the bear

YES ! In my whining I forgot to say HAPPY HAPPY FATHERS DAY!!!
Is your due date July 4?

Yes ! Kinda cool if it wasn't for feeling like I'm going to explode.

You will need to pick an Independence day baby name!

I have a fourth of July Hatch going!

Sadly they are not for me.....But I do have chicks for me hatching on the 20th!

I hope I hatch out before the. But il
Join your hatch along ;-)

If you like the idea of Independence day baby names I have a few suggestions ;)   any you don't pick will go to  chicks in the 4th of July hatch Ron is doing for me!!!!!  :weee

We have no names so pm me all your ideas :-)))

That really sucks- sorry. I hope the the hot wire works.

I wouldn't trust the doctors too much on moved due dates. With my daughter, they moved her due date in the third trimester. Swore up and down there was absolutely no way I could carry her past the second week of July, she was HUGE and clearly further along than we had thought. Yeah, she was born August 15th, a month later than 'possible', and was just  8 lbs- a good size baby, but not the monster they thought. Ultrasound measurement and dating estimates are not perfect.

Totally ... Thanks for the empathy.

Oh Candy,  Really sorry to hear about your loss.  I can't even imagine having to deal with keeping birds safe from Bears.

Thanks , it's getting harder to keep them frightened.

No, luckily, though it felt like a mild sprain right when I did it! Sat with my foot up with some frozen veggies on my ankle for about 20 minutes, then got up to finish what I was trying to do (getting the chickens ready, water the garden, repot the seedlings in the greenhouse, finish packing...) and it's normal now.

And thanks, we will!

This is the first time I have had more than 4 chicks at any one time.

It seems that when most of them are asleep (or trying to be) one little bugger thinks he/she is lonely and needs to wake everyone up by either crying or stepping on everyone.

I still enjoy the "planking" they do it is so cute. And the couple who fall asleep standing and droop thier head till it his the floor. Look a little like ostriches trying to bury their head.

One little guy last night kept crying and crying till we picked him up (boy CLB) then he would fall asleep in the hand. I had heard that CLB still had a bit of wild streak left in them so were more skittish. This one just wanted to be held it was strange most chicks will calm down being held but this one seemed to actually want to be picked up.

My wife really likes baby chicks especially when she can tell them apart.

It is amazing how fast they grow. Ive had them just over a day and the wing feathers coming in make them seem like they change hourly.
I think they are at least 20% larger than when I picked them up too. (at least it seems that way)

I could tell that your daughter was really excited about them, too! I have my last hatch in the brooder and it was a smaller one with only 9 chicks. I've decided that 8-10 is a really good number for me to have in a hatch. They have plenty of company and their care is more manageable. It is easier to keep track of a smaller number of chicks of different breeds than 20-25 chicks of one breed that all look very similar!

Quote: I haven't had any frizzles so don;t knwwhen they start getting curled feathers. I know I have seen some chick pictures that did not seem much older that her with curled ones. Hope she reveals herself soon!

Pics of the babies maybe some one can comment on th CLBs that are lighter

These 2 look very much like ny latest Mottle Ameraucana project chicks

Here's the hen I'm considering selling to a home where she'll be used in a breeding project to see if these beautiful eyes are genetic. If they are, I can only imagine the cool eyes you could breed from her and her offspring.
(She needs a bath, as you can see she's a Splash Andalusian - supposed to be white with blue splotches but nope, she's been dustbathing so she's white & BROWN with blue splotches lol!!)

Very pretty! She looks like she has stars in her eyes....
We're going camping tomorrow. So of *course* I step in a hole on the way to fill the chickens' waterer and feeder to last until we get back

Wee......of course! Hope you didn't injure it to badly.

There's several big family gatherings I can't attend this month, so from now until almost the Fourth of July I've got quadruple the chicken chores or more. When all the family members return it will be about time to start transferring some of the birds I've been growing out for them over to their properties as well. It's going to make caring for my own flock seem so quick and easy lol.

It does feel goo when the flock is thinned......right before we build it back up again!
Adventures in Foster Broodies, part 5

The babies are growing up! Climbing on mom, learning to navigate the ramp, jumping on logs. Sybil gives them treats and calls them when there's something new to scratch at.

Very cute!

Quote: Our locl feedstore just got some Polish in, but only 1/2 of what they ordered. They sais they hatchery was having a tough time with them this year too.....very poor hatches.

Thank goodness!

This seems to be a bad year for me with chickens. There were only 2 that hatched from the last batch of Mott AM project chickens for LuvinBlue. They have been doing well outside and are very tight in their relationship. They pretty much go everywhere together. I went to let them out of the small pen yesterday morning and found the younger, darker one "hiding" next to a piece of downspout drainage tube near the door of the pen. I was not making any effort to move and the 2 of them usually hide behind the broody coop. The other one was there. I picked this one up and say a wound on the right light about mid way up from the ankle. There was dried blood in the feathers and I think that was restricting it's ability to move the leg because the feathers were caked and kind of wrapped around the leg. I loosened the feathers and cleaned the wound. I put some Vetricin wound gel spray on it put it in a box in the house with food/water. I sprayed it again later. It was holding the leg up when it stands, but mostly is laying on it's keel. I checked it this morning and the bird seems to be holding it's own an far as attitude, but the leg looks worse. It looks like there is an abscess in the foot. The color is gray while the other one is pink. It feels the same temperature as the unaffected foot, but I am not sure what to do for this chick. I am thinking t needs oral antibiotics, but not sure which to use. I have Tylan 50 and Terrravet 10.

So glad to hear it was not a serious injury
I would suspect mites and they only come out at night, then hide in cracks and crevices in the coop during the daylight. I'd clean the coop, spray it thoroughly, Sevin dust it and put in all new bedding. I'd probably treat the birds with ivomectrin too just to be on the safe side.

Do some research on mites.
I agree do some research there are so many places to find good research information & plans of action.

I agree...although disappointed with the hatch a smaller group is sooooooooo much easier to take care of.
