Did you try freeze dried mealworms? Has it experienced the great outdoors? If so, it might be nagging you for another taste of sunshine.

I have some live ones I tried giving to the little older ones.
Perhaps once they know they're good, they'll come closer.
I may try it early on the young ones. They have grit in there in preparation .
Thank you! Great idea, I forgot about mealies

Chrissyr, we spend lots of time packing the birds around. Quite a few have been brooded in the laundry room and are so used to dogs, people, noises they are pretty much bomb proof. They learn to trust and relax, training them to station is another matter. It's not quick but it's nice to know they won't fly off the table and get DQ'd.

That shade screen made a big difference for my area.
It makes it much more bearable

Yes! I Have shade screen already but need to cover more with it. The misters work great too--They do not make the ground wet when I do not run them all day long....

Two of the wells in Woodland have gone dry so we need to be careful with water.

Quote: They don't, do they? All that chasing it around to try to help....the least it could have done was TOLD me it found it's was back to Mom and said "Thank you".

I was able to plug a few holes and they haven't ventured out again. Some of the meat birds have found a way out of the new area and back into the yard though. We had just deer netting up and it worked for a few days but I think the grandkids accidently cut thru a section. We bough some poultry netting and will put that up in addition to the deer netting for the bottom 3 feet. This is only the "Day Pen" so doesn't have be super secure. They are still locked in the fully enclosed pen at night. I also bought some Cinder Block caps to put along the fence where it meet the ground. It is very scary to walk along it ans see now many places critters have pushed under it.
Go out in the back yard and there is the little troublemaker pecking away at the ground with Mom and sibling like nothing even happened!!!! It had no appreciation of what I had just put myself Thur to try to rescue it!.

Sounds like quite a little adventure! So sorry you are not well

I don't know if I got my sash...I may have spoken too soon so I am posting pics soon of the alleged splash and the chipmunk who has something funky going on with its eyes.

Thanks for the well wishes, I am feeling somewhat better, but still having other issues. Tests today were goof. No Hep B and nothing negative on the ultrasound. Still don;t know why I am having the symptoms though

Quote: Thank you! Mine may be the result of an overdise of IV anitbiotics giving to me during a surger in 2002. I ended up back in the hospital for a week after initislly being discharges with a fever of unknown origin and induce helptitis. It has be sensitive ever since.

Well Im going to have to do something about rodents. I saw a rat running along the ground away from the coop at the back wall. Looks like some glue traps and bait are a bit overdue. Ive know that Ive had rats around due to them eating my potato and other plants in my garden but this was the first I saw one in the early morning and had not seen any evidence of them around lately. The last set of glue boards only caught a number of lizards. Looks like a weekend pest project. One of our neighbors has cats maybe I can use some used cat litter in a few place to discourage them.
I have had rat issues since I started keepin finvhes outside and they hve move out near the chickend too. I have a bigh rubbermails outdoor storage container I keep my feed in and I kept hearing soething ynder it....but I am a coward and didn't want to move it. It finally chewed a hole thru the bottom and scared the C**P out of me by being in there when I opened it up. I quickly set my elelctronic trap and by morning hea was a dead mouse!

. And thank goodness I got out. Tha is suck a helples feeling!

I'm so torn. My family is going on a family vacation to Hawaii, and I have until Sunday to decide if I want to go or not. One one hand...it's Hawaii! On the other, I have pretty debilitating health problems, IBS and anxiety, so I don't think I would have fun. I don't know if my dogsitter is able to take on all 3 dogs that I have right now(my dog and 2 fosters) AND the only person I know of that can take care of my chickens and chicks is my neighbor. She's willing to help, but knows nothing about caring for chickens.
Ugh. What would you guys do?

Than is a toughy. Bottom line though is that you may not get this chance again so I would take it. Even on the "Tourist" Island (Oahu) there are things to do that you don't have to do with a crowd of strangers. It really is a beautiful plave even if all you do is drive around
U of a blues , penedesenca and olive egger from Ron

I have a splash and blue UofA , penedesenca boys to good homes. PM me if interested. Very pretty boys!
Nice loking birds!

Here is the cry baby. Fine now that it's on my lap. Really strange how it won't keep quiet in the brooder
Maybe a feather duster would help....a good quality one

Quote: She sent me quail, Serama, silkie, silkie surprise, project silkies, Jubilee, FBCM, and a couple of bress eggs. Can't wait to see what hatches....

Well the glue boards got one last night. All the baited snap traps got were ants. No evidence that the block bait was touched. But one rat down is better than none.

My snap traps attract lots of ants also. I haven't had any success with the glue traps, they just got covered with chicken dust. A couple of years ago I had "Houdini" rat. It was caught in a spring trap but not dead, I picked up the trap and dropped it in a metal garbage can filled with rain water. When I came back a half hour later to get rid of it only the trap was in the can. With my luck that smart sucker is the parent stock to what I'm trying to get rid of now.

Maybe he looks like a Zombie Rat now!

Traps are not as effective because rats are very cautious about food and new things with food. It usually takes several days before they try it and when the see it catch one, they know to avoid it.

Liquid poisons do not work that way. They do not have a caution with liquid because we have not been using it long enough.

A trick for the stick bates is to use thin wire through the middle and then put the bait stick out near a track. connect the end that does not have the bait on it to something to secure. Keep the dogs away from it if using outside.

Is anyone interested in taking in six or so chickens (one roo and the rest hens)? My kids' school (in Oakland) has had a coop for years with a flock of chickens that all of the kids adore. Unfortunately, due to construction, they are shutting down the coop. The flock is a mix--two bantams (a silkie and a frizzled something), and the rest are standard size although I don't know what breeds. They would like to find a new home for all of the chickens together if possible.
