Well....this youngster with the injured leg is going to lose the entire foot I think. The toes started to atrophy and are clearly dying. I was hoping the foot itself would be OK and it could use it for balance but it is not looking like that will be the case. Looks like it will even lose a little bit of the lower leg....basically everything below the wound. I still don't know how the injury even occured.

Has anyone had any experience with a 1-legged chicken? I imagine they could be kept alive, but what would the quality of life be? Right now it is doing well and seems happy enough. It is eating, hopping around, etc But it could not scratch around in the dirt like a normal chicken. It is one of the 2 mottled AM and from my experience most of them tend to be on the lighter end of the scale as far as LF go. I am trying to decide whether to just cull now or to let it grow a bit and cull when it is big enough to make use of the meat. It has always been the smaller of the 2 that hatched from that clutch so I don't know if it sill ever put on much size.

My poor little Olive Egger is so lonely. She's all alone in the brooder. She should be fine for 2 weeks until the chicks in the bator hatch, right? She's more skittish now that she's alone but she's not loudly cheeping or anything like that.

Try putting a mirror and a stuffed animal in with her.

Of course papa brooder might have a chick so she is not too lonely....

Poor chicken!

Do a search on BYC. There have been some with one legged and missing foot problems.

Aw, sorry. Poor chick. If it were mine, I think I would cull it now. I know how hard it is to make the decision not to give it a chance, though. Good luck with your chick/decision.

Nope, no pullets in that breed. I had an assortment of breeds hatch in this group. 6 out of 10 were pullets though. So can't complain

I love it when that happens!

I once hatched out all pullets. I did not believe it though.

I also hatched out 2 CL cockerels out of 12 shipped eggs and no pullets.

Yes I thought I had the "Midas touch", until my last hatch was :CL - 14 boys out of 17!!
I didn't even know that was possible! That's like playing the lotto in reverse or something :)
