I read an article about organic Soy Beans used for Feed being mostly imported from china. It looks like it is more and more true for all Organic Soy products. The Article said that most of the USA regular Soy is shipped to China While the Organic Soy is shipped to the USA for Feed. There is a huge price difference.

This Article has some of the information along with a link to an USDA Article.

Don't want anything from china. Those dried mealworms come from there too.
All of the dog food recalls that killed pets were because they contained contaminated products from china.
My brother went there for business. He said the restaurants served lots of bugs and snake egg embryos. Well just about all the gross stuff you can think of. That's because they don't eat things like fish there because there are too many pollutants in the water. And he said there was thick smog everywhere.
If there are environmental guidelines there, it must not be written in Chinese . They are the worlds biggest polluter .
No food from china, thank you

You would have to search through the CSU thread to find the sections on Rocks & Doms

Yeah CSU in California means a whole different thing

Ron is hatching for me and we are on day 10. My biggest girl has gone broody and I am planning to give her as many of the chicks as I can when they hatch. She is a big ol fluffy thing. How will I know how many chicks to give her? I think she can manage a dozen plus. But I have never given a hen chicks before.

Here is her pic she is a Chocolate Barred Plymouth Rock from Chooks Chick's project.

The bird bath she is next to is about 18 inches across the top and this was taken last fall. She is bigger and puffier now

Also my sizzle girl has decided to join the broody party. She will also get chicks if she is serious but I don't know how many for her either.

Can they have more because it is summer?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Anyone able to tell me the number of chicks I can give them?

Juststruttin,
I used King Organic starter/grower and Organic Layer Pellets for awhile, but the local feed store is flaky and inconsistent with stock. I tried the Freedom but didn't like the substitute for soy. I stopped using King due to my birds getting sick, having to treat them, and eventually finding a hand sized lump of moldy pellets in a bag I was using. I suspect neglect of rotation/allowing stock to get wet by the local feed store, and since they are the only ones stocking King, I go elsewhere. I use Modesto Milling and am satisfied with their organic rations.

For adult birds, I supplement water regularly 3x a week with a Breeder Plus solution and Probios dispersible powder. When they are in the pre-molt stage and become stressed or less active, I use Lewerstim (made by MedPet)1x per week since it has the required amount of B vitamins, Calcium Pantothenate, thiotic acid, and liver extract which helps cleanse and support the liver. This, I believe, is most important for older birds that tend to get fatty livers from being less active. Some of my birds are 10 yrs old now. When they are moulting, I will mix some wheat germ oil fortified with A,D,E and nutritional yeast flakes in with each lb of feed 1-2 times a week maximum. If I give no-salt tuna or buttermilk (never both together), I do it sparingly mixed in feed, and only give enough that they will eat it all right away, as to not attract flies. I've found this encourages those difficult moulters, who sometimes go off feed during moult, to eat better. I think it is good to examine choline content in foods. Choline is also a liver cleansing vitamin.

I supplement greens by using kale or spinach since they both have good mineral and vitamin profiles. Not much green here this time of year. Other things I grow, such as lettuce and occasional tomatoes, are also given on occasion.
Thanks Michael. Great info.

I lived in China for 6 months and attended the University of Shanghai. This was back in 1987 so things have changed for better or for worse. When I was there, we had to be very careful with what and where we ate. We never ate raw vegetables because it simply was not safe because the water used to water the field was contaminated. On our way home, we had a stop over in Hong Kong and I ate a huge salad. I was dying for some leafy greens.

Is there anyone who can help a novice's untrained eye begin to understand breeding terminology about shapes feathering etc.

Ive been looking at PBR chickens a lot lately and I think the hypnotic barring pattern is getting to me.

Im having a hard time distinguishing between PBR (and the various qualities) and things like Dominique or Holland.
No I know PBR and Holland both have Dominque heritiage but there are few places I can actually see good pics let alone put them side by side. (I know Dominque has a rose comb)
SOP is a great resource

The APA SOP has all the information on all that. You could also read the CSU thread. I don't think Hollands were discussed, though.

If you look at a silhouette of a Rock and a Dominique, they are completely different shapes. The barring is also different on a BR versus a Dominique.
Not only the written descriptions but the pictures (drawings) really point out the differences. Walt helped us learn that at a recent show.

The cheaper versions that you see on ebay, amazon etc. are either old or incomplete.
I didn't realize they were that expensive. I am sure I didn't pay that much when I bought mine at the Stockton Show some years back right after it was released. That was before the BCMs were admitted, But the Doms & BRs should be in any of them. They have been around for a long time. Maybe you could start with a cheaper older one & get a new one when the news are released.

A bunch. I have a small LF hen with 13 & my grandmothers hatchery hens had more than that sometimes.

Thanks! If you are serious contact ChooksChick here on BYC. She is an amazing girl. A Big fan of calories but not above finding them on her own

She should be able to handle all of the chicks that will hatch.

These folks had a Hen raise 24 and even 26!

It does not look too good today. Thee of 5 Pita Pintas are developing but I only see development in 4 of the Ranger eggs. Shipping must have been rough on them. I wonder if the foam is the correct type. @chiqita posted that there is one good one that is sold.

I have not removed any of the ranger eggs and will make the final decision when I set them up for lockdown.

Pita Pinta chicks are so cute! I have them eating off of my finger. They chirp until I go to them and "feed" them too.
