Hello all!

Had hopes of reading through past posts but... Things really pile up when I'm gone all week.
Round Robin was terrible! DD is a weeper on the best of days but her second species was swine. The swine judge told her she had no business in the pig ring since she did chickens, that set her off. The 1500+ steer dragging the kids all over the ring and stepping on her foot twice was tough. The part that really hurt her was when they announced she finished last after her 3rd place finish last year. I've got a year to try and convince her to do her best and not tank it like she keeps telling me she is going to do.

Good to read your wife is doing well and coming home so soon Ron. She's braver than me for sure!

Hope everyone is doing well in the heat. I lost a basque hen yesterday, probably a combination of things that did her in sadly.

My basque too went to fair this year, so guy was teasing him through the cage and Hans got his finger. Wasn't pleased with me when I took the chickens side since he hadn't bothered anyone who hadn't bothered him first!

WHAT? Just exactly did the judge mean when he said that if someone shows chickens they have no business showing swine as their second species? That is wildly inappropriate.

Our fair has all nine species in the final showmanship competition, cavies, rabbit, poultry, dog, swine, goat, steer, sheep, and horse. The judge for swine doesn't feel the kids in the small animal division should be included in the round robin. Of the 9 kids in the ring 6 have shown poultry at some point. We have enjoyed watching the kid with the steer trying to show a chicken!

If the rules don't separate large and small animals, then the judge needs to put on his big boy pants and do his job instead of discouraging children by taking out his frustrations on them.

When she has a chance to reflect I think that this year will be the year she learned the most. It wasn't the results she wanted but she toughed it out and did it. I learn the most from my mistakes, she will also. The luck of the draw this year just gave them some onery critters. After 4 days of confinement to stalls I don't blame the animals.
