California - Northern

LOL- they are from a hatchery. I just don't know how experienced the person was who picked out my chicks. Or if they didn't read the order and shipped straight run. Out of 13 live chicks it looks like 4 or 5 will be cockerels. Plus the extra was a cockerel.

I know how invested breeders of any species can be in the end result of their hard work and planning. I didn't want to disappoint a breeder if I messed up or decided chickens, my dogs and this house didn't work well together. If all goes well, next year I get to decide on a breeder.
Is it possible that the cockerels were extras sent to keep the chicks warm?

They call them packing peanuts and they are usually red star cockerels and are sex linked.

Ack! Bantams or lf?

Unless the chicks are coming from a hatchery, it is a gamble on the accuracy of sexing. Most backyard "breeders" have no idea how to sex chicks. Vent sexing is the most accurate, but very few know how to do it.

Isn't that the truth! I've looked and it all looks like the same package to me! Around here we have to do it the old fashioned way and wait. Unless of course the offspring are sexlinked.

Which reminds me - someone told me that SLW can be used with a Sex-link program. Is this true? Does anyone know what color of rooster should be used? I have 3 hatchery SLW and that sounds like a fun experiment.

Yes give it a try. I used a short wooden spoon from the kitchen. (Don't let the DW know....)

Its a nice name for every type of leakage on one bird lol. Fezzik is likely fireflys son.

Big breeders HATE the name but its popular with pet chickens cause it looks so spectacular.

When he was little he glowed blue and red. He got pecked in the head as a juvie and got sever wry neck. Needed vits and hand feeding for 3 weeks and then went to a pet home with just 2 chickens.

Then he was a boy.... and came home!

I think the surviving the hard peck as a vaulted scull juvie means he is passing on strong genes and is not prone to meningitis. All his chicks have been nice and strong.

He is handsome!
I didn't ask. I thought they had experience.
Ugh, I once nearly bought a 'sexed' baby cockatiel I was paying a lot extra for. Luckily, I asked where they'd done the DNA sexing... they'd used the old wives' tale ring on a string method and were CHARGING for that service like someone would for dna sexing.

I've heard of the roosters being used over barred hens for black sex links, I haven't heard of the hens being used for sex links.

Hello Cackle Joy, and Everybody!
I did a search in Google and lo and behold a very knowledgeable contributor called "loveourbirds" posted a rather helpful and detailed commentary in this very forum on 9/1/13 pertaining to some particulars of sex linkage, per se. As you asked, in it was a mention of Silver Laced Wyandottes and their utility in sex linked production. The title of this grand dissertation, Sex Linked Chickens for Beginners, What They are and How to Breed Them. According to the page, an updated version was submitted on 2/12/14. You have to admire that sort of dedication to the industry and our hobby!

Just googled this, here are the SLW hen quotes:

Cinnamon Queens are another form of red sex link, and are usually easier to breed than Golden comets. They are created by using a Silver Laced Wyandotte hen, and a Rhode Island Red rooster. Male chicks will come out white, while hens are more red or brown in color.
A trick to breeding Cinnamon Queens may be to check earlobe color on parents and use red earlobes only. If you are gearing for egg production only use smaller framed parents for best feed to egg conversions.

You can also use Delaware hens and Rhode Island white hens, and several other breeds in sex link breeding.

I didn't know that! Cool.
