nice! If you need more boys I still have the extra 13

Has anyone had their dog hunt squirrels? We are enclosed on the property and they hunt gophers.
They had a squirrel cornered last week. But I figured if I brought the dogs in , it would find it's way out.
Today they had it. Well at least I think it was a squirrel. Half the body and tail were gone. I don't think the rabbits come in here and not the right color.
This dog is 10 years old and hunts anything that doesn't belong. She's been working at the gopher holes for a few weeks too .
But she's great with the chickens and OUR cats

Didn't know how common squirrel hunting is

Thanks for the offer!

I am fine though.

We had a cat the hunted squirrels once. He was a very big boy...

We moved from San Diego to Chico. Our cats were definitely city cats. They would sit by the gopher holes and have dirt thrown in their faces. They never even tried to catch them.

My dog is constantly hunting squirrels in our yard. She has yet to catch one but she will run 5 feet up the Cedar trees trying to get them. Those squirrels know just how close they can get. We have lots of trees in our yard so they run from tree to tree and drive Pixar crazy. She is also a fantastic opossum hunter! I watched her catch a big one and shake it. Last summer, she caught and killed 5 young ones over a period of a couple weeks. This summer the count is only at 1 but it was a bigger one. I went to turn on the water for my morning garden chores and there it was lying on top of the hose. Talk about a shock! We aren't sure what breed she is because she was a rescue dog. The lady who rescued her out in the country by Lodi thought that she was a Catahoula but the vet she took her to thought that she had some Australian cattle dog in her. I do know that she is a header which is more typical of cattle dogs. She looks a lot like pics of McNab border collies. When we first let her out with the chickens, there was a short learning curve that ended with the death of 3 different cockerels but she is fantastic with them now. They are part of her pack. She lets me know when something has upset the flock and runs out to patrol the perimeter of the yard.

She has a goofy look on her face (most likely she had just finished eating a recycled chicken treat) but this is the most recent pic I have of her:

She is cute! Mine are Australian shepherds. You just can't beat a smart dog! When they learn fast, it makes things easy

I've always heard that cats who catch gophers are hard to come by.
Our 16 year old cat passed last week. She was one of them. And she was sweet too.
The dogs notify me when one is close in a hole. She'll whine, dig and look at me. I get the hose and let her do her thing.
But once they have tunnels
Built it's a little harder to flush them out

Nope, she is Monet's self appointed constant protector and sleeps on a dog bed in her room. It is interesting that we used to have lots of raccoon in the yard until we got the dog. One time, Monet and I were in the backyard with a flashlight and there were 5 sets of eyes looking down at us from one of the cedar trees! Pixie does her business around the perimeter of the yard and now we never see evidence of raccoon. They might still be there but no signs of them washing things in the chicken dishes, etc. We do have opossum, skunk, squirrel, and roof rats. It is an urban jungle out there!

Rats drink water once a day--liquid poison works very well.

Im having trouble with 2 of my Dels not wanting to go to bed at night. they used to go to bed fine until the last 2 Buff Orps left.

Lurk (my half blind one) and Verna the big fat one both sit out on the ledge by the opening to the coop if we put them back in they come out again.

I think their roosting routine was disturbed or something by the departure of the Buffs. (they tend to sleep in the nest box because neither roosts well but Im not sure what the problem is. They all get along with the others just fine during the day. My daughter has been putting them to bed nightly well after dark and they seem to be waiting for it and finally settle down inside (as far as I can tell)

The 2 other dels and one Buff roost on the upper high roost. the other buff is on the lower roost even though there is plenty of room on both roosts. Im considering making another lower roost and seeing if that helps.

Ill be adding a light to the coop soon too.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Oh no!  Glad it wasn't much worse.  Hope she recovers completely.
DH has ridden them since he was 15...he's 66 now.    He went from a Yamaha Royal Star Tour Deluxe to a Honda Gold Wing and now has a Honda Magna.  He had the Yamaha since 1997, but is was huge and just got to be too heavy for him to hold up.  The Gold Wing was lighter, but the seat was too high for him to put his feet on the ground, so he sold it.  He really wanted a CanAm. but they are about $16000 for a used one.  I was hoping he would just be a car driver , but it is so in his blood that he was not happy without a bike.  He would spend all his internet time looking at them and  listening to the engines.  So we went to Sac and got him the Magna 750 with our income tax refund and now he is much happier.   He works as a Respiratory Therapist and is in ER and Neuro/Trauma a lot and has seen some really horrific accidents.  None of them have deterred him.

Crazy- I read your post and skipped trying to read the next ten pages I'm behind. My husband and I can not ride bikes due to family loses. My mil was head respiratory therapist at valley med in San Jose and worked in the er for years. Of course her boys were banned from bikes! She started riding after her divorce and found a new life of happiness. She bought a heritage and LOVED it. After coming back from her fathers funeral in jersey she was to bummed to ride her own bike on a run through Jackson and got on the back of her best friends husbands bike. They got a pinch flat and rolled the bike. She flew off and landed on her face never to recover. We (at 25yrs old) had to go to Davis and decide to pull support. A year later my brother in law , while riding her bike) hit a new curb in the dark on a familiar street and died on foxworthy in sj. No bikes for us. Now our son just pulled up last week on a street bike:-( I'll stick to the dangers of roosters!
