California - Northern

Hatch is done (day 22). Yay!
Final results:
9 silkie/sizzle eggs = 1 cracked (tossed at day 10), 8 hatched, 1 died before pipping internally (egg marked "SR", dark gray with silver streaks, bummer)
1 white bantam cochin egg = hatched
10 chocolate orpington eggs = 10 hatched

20 eggs to start, 19 eggs went into lockdown = 18 hatched

No curled toes, no wry neck, no health issues other than the last sizzle (looks white or lavender) that was 1 day later than everyone else & had the shell glued to it

Here's the last 3 orps:

and the 2nd sizzle
so tired

Everyone's eating & drinking well - in addition to trying to bite each others toes. Guess I need some meal worms. :)
I'll take some updated photos tomorrow after I change the poopy papers. There are 2 orps that look like mini black bears - they are so round & fat.
Congrats! Awesome hatch! My current brood from Jeff are all growing so well and healthy! I'm going to get more eggs from him in the spring.

Have to share a couple of photos of the seramas I got from @chiqita

This little guy is going to be a kick in pants when he grows up, er, gets older...

He FREAKS when getting caught but calms right down once you have him in your hands

and this teeny pullet is getting the prettiest feathers

They have the squeakiest cheep

And, of course, one of the shizzles
Soo Cute!

I'm bummed...was checking out my 1 month olds and am I 95% sure that 2 of my 3 bantam cochins are boys (pink wattles already); that makes 7/10 confirmed boys from my hatch.

And the prettiest little Blue Copper Marans roo I have has a little sprig growing on his comb. I was hoping to find him a good home as a breeder because his color is so amazing already...guess he's gonna be dinner. Grrr... I'm almost ready to buy started pullets except for the fact that I'm so worried about the bio-security issues (none of my birds are vaccinated)

Go ahead and get the started pullets. vaccinated for mareks does not matter--you can mix them when they are older. Other stuff, use the quarantine method.

Anyone have any suggestions for 2 birds that just dont seem to want to go all the way into the coop at night?

They used to go into the coop at night but for some reason they no longer do. They just sit on the ledge in front of the doorway. (I do not have a door to close them in at night because the coop is well off the ground (3+ feet) and the run is enclosed in a fenced in back yard (not many predators to speak of in the area)

I don't know if the sleeping arrangements got thrown off by the buffs that came to live with them then left or not. The coop and nest box have been cleaned out in hopes that might be it.

I'm really puzzled.

Also now that all 4 are laying we are finding eggs in the run on occasion. I think it may be because the line for the nest box at times or simply that they are new to laying and having trouble with timing. They seem to leave the eggs alone unless they get broken then they are quickly eaten.

Tomorrow is supposed to start a cooling trend so it would be a good idea to lock them into the coop for three nights and days. This will rehome them and teach them that the coop is home.

The other way is to pick them up and set them onto the roost each night. That can take several weeks.

How big is your coop and how much roost space do they have? If there is a lot of squabbling or fighting over roost space the lower birds in the pecking order may be reluctant to go in. If there were issues with the buffs that came and went that could also be the root of the problem. Does your coop have plenty of windows/natural light? Many chickens do not like going into a dark, closed in coop.

If there is only one nest box you may need to add another. Although half the time they all want the same box anyway lol!

I'm seriously considering it! What do you guys consider the minimum safe distance between my established pen/run and a quarintine coop?

They can see each other but should not be close enough for sneezes to get to the others.

Always dust them with poultry or garden dust and worm them too.
