So I have a five week old chick that is crowing. That is a new record for me. I've had banties and one precocious Marans come close, but this squeaky little thing is hilarious (til he gets more volume).

The downside is he decided to set off the bachelor pen over and over and over again this morning, and they are not so quiet. Might have to be a chicken and dumplings weekend.

I started pizza dough this morning and will be baking two pizzas tonight!

Second worming this weekend and of course feather clean up! Molting chickens leave a lot of feathers.
Yum!

Do you compost your feathers? Big Coop/Run cleaning day here on Saturday gotta get an early start :)

I moved my Marans, AMs and my Isbar/Marans OE into the big pen last night. They have been ranging with the big kids for months. Popped them into the big kid coop last night and things have gone smoothly.

My cracked egg did not stink as of yesterday. There is actually a pip sized chunk of shell missing that I didn't seal with wax as I thought it might be too warm for the chick if it is still with us. I haven't seen movement in that spot but I haven't been watching all that carefully. I figure what gives it the best chance is to be left alone so that is what I am doing. It is one of two viable eggs that were post hatch hold outs...my aunt did not mark the eggs she set so there was confusion when other hens added eggs. I had a broody so I gave them both to her then dropped one on the other cracking the egg that is now in the bator. Judging by the development I saw when I candled them last weekend they still had about a week to go so this weekend looks like when I will find out one way or another.

Quote: I have them straight up right now. I am terrible at telling how airsacs are at arrival so should I just reat them as though they are bad? They were packed extreemly well, but did come all the way from Tennessee. They arrived in the morning of the second day. So turn them upsidedown twice a day. (change from big end up to small end up) for 3 days, then start the turner?
They are and auction I won on BYC for "6+ sizzle eggs" and "6 SQ Splash Silkie eggs" from EMVIckery.

I don't have any Cornish...only some EE's.
Quote: So it would be the 4th and 5th toes that should have feathers. 1,2, and 3 are naked on this one.

The chicks I was interested in were Dark Cornish. I don't care what color, but I've been keeping an eye out for some non- Rock or X Cornish. Sending a PM about the Jumbo Cots.

Dark is the color of the Cornish. They do come in other colors though. Real..non hatchery Cornish are not great egg layers....

Yeah, she had Dark Cornish, I was just saying I didn't have a preference for those over white, buff, laced or whatever. I think they're all homely, but wanted to try out some pure Cornish. I can wait until next year, though. We've got quite a few Marans and Rocks to stock the freezer, and I'd also like to try some Pita Pinta next year. I have nothing against the spare dual purpose heritage breed boys as meals, we're just wanting to experiment a bit with other birds to raise primarily for meat.

Quote: LOL!!! I hatched 2 from eggs Chiqita's laid and they are both boys about 4 weeks old. I have a lot more young ones in the brooder though. Of course they are just beginning to feather out so too you to tell the sex on. My adults are slowing down on laying now though. I have 2 adult A&Ms (1 male for sure, the other I think is a hen), 4 Tuxedos (1 adult male, 2 asult females and 1 young one I think is female) . 2 adult male and 4 adult female tibetans and 1 adult male Pharoah and 1 asdult female pharoah. They are all from Chiqita. I order the eggs for the 4 week olds from someone on the East Coast to have some new blood and threw in few of the eggs from my adults. I got the 2 male Tibetans, the young Tuxedo and 2 that are colored differently that the others. They are lighter and redder with a different pattern on the feathers. I have no idea what the color would be called but someone on FB said they looked like Rosettas.

Nice! I just got some eggs from her this week for quail. I thought "Quail are simple, let's do it". But after talking with her, she has me convinced French Muscovies are awesome as well . So 2 new projects.
