i added wood ash to their coops inside and out in the runs
Make a place for them to dust bath--do something like 3 parts sand and one pare ash.

Also, is there a neighbor or your 4-H poultry leader that you could borrow some poultry\vegetable dust from?

I just wanted to report that I found a wonderful home for the two pure BCMs. He promised to send pics and said I could come visit his farm. I can tell finding homes for the crosses will be tougher, but I'm feeling more optimistic!

I would just like to say @ronott1 's oe's are laying amazing! So are the Arkansas blues! They have been laying just a few weeks and eggs were 51 grams and getting bigger. I think I got 4-5 eggs each bird last week. And with this daylight, that's appreciated over here.
Gave some of those and some beige eggs to a friend today. She thought I colored them before I have them. They are so pretty!

hrm... i wonder if peppermint essential oil would be a deterrant?

For those listening to the red cell/poultry cell debate dr peter brown fell onto the poultry side in a long talk about amino acids gut villa and balanced diet. But the take away was : both are good but it is better to get your nutrition from food.

I mento to ask about vegamite as a food vitamin but i have not yet.

I'm wondering if the essential oils would mix right though in a sprayer. I have essential oils but the oils float.

If not, let me know 'cause I got 5 black orp pullets from eggs I hatched. I'd love to trade for a lavender, blue or splash. They are from Jeff (PapaBrooder) as well. They are about 9-1/2 weeks old now & growing like weeds. This is in addition to 2 black cockerels & 3 chocolates (2 pullets, 1 cockerel) & a bunch of wild frizzled silkies. I have one that looks like a black/white lionfish: And then this one has freaky green eyes...
EEEK!! I love your collection! Someday I will get SOMETHING frizzled!!

That is good news!

I have been getting a lot of blue eggs too. The OE pullets that I have are too small still but they are growing very fast.

I am going to have so many pretty eggs this spring!

Thanks, Ron! I will have to wait to get the P/U back from my daughter and go get load of sand.. I have a good sized pen About 100' long by about 20-25' wide so I think I will have to put my grandson to work with the wheelbarrow. I am almost done with the new quali pend too so I think I will wait until I can get that moved into place.
Quote: I.use muck boots from tractor supply. They are plastic rain style type boots with good tread on the bottom. They keep me from slipping.
I have a hard tme getting those on and off. I have a pair of wanna-be crocks that I am using when it is wet out, but they don't have good traction....plus the holes all over the top are not good in rain.

Woohoo! We had a block party here yesterday during which we opened our garden for coop-tours. It was great to get to do some chicken education and to get feedback from neighbors about the rooster crowing (all positive!!!). Kids from the neighborhood had lots of fun holding the chickens and feeding them lots of treats. My two PQ d'uccle hens were the favorites of all the kids because they were totally unafraid, calm, and gentle. The Polish and silkies were the favorites with most of the adults, as well as our sweet cochin roo who loves being held for as long as we are willing.

We wont ever win over the two terrible neighbors that keep tying to force us to get rid of our roosters, but I have won over their children, friends, and girlfriends so I will take that as score one for the good guys,

and if it ever comes down to it, I know I have the support of the rest of the neighborhood. Its great to feel like my community supports my eccentricity!
That is great! It is always a good ide to schmooze as many neighbors as possible....

Does anyone know the name of a wild bird who is a dark brown/olive color, with a yellow breast and yellow "eyeliner"? I found one sitting behind the wheel of our truck, not moving. He let me scoop him up and hold him for awhile without complaint. He even closed his eyes to rest!

I think his wings are the problem. I have him in a carrier, hoping to give him some water.

Did I do the right thing by picking him up and giving him shelter? We have some pretty fierce cats around here and I would feel terrible if I saw a clump of feathers, know that I could have helped him.
I think you did. They are so vulnerable in that state, Warmth is all I would privife for the time being. A clamp lamp with a 40 watt bulb works great.

It's a good thing that my daughters insist on being outside if they know the chicks are in our yard! The chicks were by the pond, and one slipped and fell in

My older daughter scooped the chick out immediately, and brought it in to be towel dried (we don't own a hair dryer, never have). Dried it off in the bathroom, with the heat light/fan on, then moved into my bedroom, where the little forced air heater is, to get the last dampness out before taking it back out to go under Frieda.

Keet update... one of them zipped out. umbilicus looks perfect!

Yeah!!!!

I always felt that north up from Bakerfield is central not North.

Live in Alaska now, but grew up in California
Welcome! the the thread!

Keet that hatched after I pipped for it (chick pipped an zipped on it's own):

Great job, Kathy! What color variety are these? I have hatched pearl gray and royal purple keets for a friend. The shells are much thicker than chicken eggs and they definitley do not zip in the classinc pattern. It's more like they just bulldoze their way out...

That bird that I picked up was released a few days ago. I read on a wild bird website that birds sometimes stun themselves by running into walls or windows, and won't move much because of it. They said to put in a quiet, dark place for a few hours, and then see if it will fly away. Sure enough, it did!
