California - Northern

Well after a dry nights sleep the 2 hens I rescued yesterday seem happy this morning.

Took a couple of quick phone pics this morning. Last night I was a bit worried when looking at their combs and beaks because there was a lot of black on their heads but on closer look it really seemed to be mud. Well this morning it looks like I was right much of it is gone.

I'm thinking they were someones Back yard birds that got out and lost they seem pretty tame and fairly well cared for and were probably not lost for long.

It's awesome that you were able to collect these girls and help them get to their new home.

I have had over 6 inches of rain in he last 24 hours and it is still raining......... The pens are holding up and no flooding in them but the vineyards are under water.

Walt
That was a big front that went over that part of the coast!

Russian River will flood today too.

Everybody keep safe!

I gave them some flock raiser feed mixed with some scratch grains and a few meal worms and they seemed very happy to have plenty of food. Guess what got eaten first

. I wonder if chickens would prefer live ones. I'm going to start meal worm and red worm bins here after the new year.

These 2 girls let me stroke them easily and do not seem to be too skittish of people. Very quiet girls too only noises I heard were when I had to carry the box and even then very little. Of course that just may be instinct when scared and it was late in the day when the girls are always very mellow.

@tls ranch, did you send some barnies north to WA last week? If so you met my sister, she said she was picking some up to take back with her.

Good to read that everyone is doing reasonably well with all the water. Wind blew down some trees up here and knocked out the power for a few hours. Ran into a few traffic slow downs with minor accidents. So far so good, a few muddy spots but runs mostly dry.

I slipped eggs under a broody, I don't even know if they are fertile, we'll find out in a week or so.

Yes:) It was very nice meeting your sister and talking to your brother in law on the phone. I hope they will be happy with their barnies.

My hatching eggs arrived and I got them under my broody at 1:25 I was a little dismayed when the woman at the PO brought out a Costco sized double cereal box...you know the kind that holds two bags...but it had no holes or punctures or observable damage. It was marked fragile but no arrows indicating which end should be up.

This is how she packaged them...In an egg carton. The carton wrapped in bubble wrap...small bubbles.. centered in the cereal box with newspaper and egg carton bits surrounding. They came from Southern CA and were mailed on Mon spent wed am to thursday am in a truck somewhere between here and Petaluma.

Shockingly there was just 1 detached air cell and several that were firmly where they should have been.

My girl has 7 lf barnyard mix eggs. Their shells are everything from pale tan to dark brown and light blue to olive.

that I get something out of them.

Most excellent Chris! Thank you, THANK YOU for driving out there in a pouring rainstorm to rescue them! Much, much appreciated!!! They look decent for having been without shelter or decent food for 10+ days now. Any sign of mites or nasal/ocular discharge? BTW, I asked the finder if he named them, he said he was calling them pakpak and prrprr. I kinda like that! Can't wait to meet up with you on Sunday. Thanks again!

I've raised mealworms. It is a messy, somewhat smelly adventure but very worthwhile. I suggest starting in Spring when the weather warms, to make it easier on yourself. They like warmth :)

Totally agree.
My 5-y-o son loves to pick them out of their bin with me. He shows me each one, "Ooo! Mommy! I found a BIG one!"
Then we get mobbed going into the coop. The flock recognizes the cups I use.
