Hoping for a few dry days.
yesterday was not supposed to rain hardly. It rained all day here and its still a heavy drizzle.
I need the sun.

I have some Black Penedesenca and Bantam Brown Red Ameraucana eggs if anyone has the hatching itch and doesn't mind driving up here

Oooh! We are headed up your way either today or tomorrow to deliver 4 Pita Pinta pullets to our friends who live off of Snows Rd. I can't add a new breed right now or I would snap them up! I am stretched to the max with my Langshan and Pita Pinta. If anyone in the East Bay wants me to transport eggs from Jason back to this area, I am more than willing to do that!

@PetRock Norma is still sitting tightly on 6! I ditched an early quitter on Thursday. I will look for the last time tomorrow or Tuesday but I am really happy with how this hatch is turning out. Two green eggs are still in the running!

Here are the babies that hatched 8 days ago and their mama. One of them seems to have sizzle feathers growing in so bio mama must carry the sizzle gene. That's a happy surprise! She and the boy I am picking up from @TheKeeper will make some cool looking chicks!

Oh yes! The barring on the boy is really cool. I'd post a new pic but all my chickens are so muddy & filthy right now. My little white cochin frizzle pullet is half white / half brown. Bleh!

Does mama have frizzle feathers?
Thinking about frizzle genetics, isn't it bad to breed frizzle to frizzle? That's how you get a "frazzle" (pin cushion looking)? Anyone chime in here...

Haven't heard "frazzle", but I have seen a " curly". I can't imagine that bird retaining any body heat.

Raining so hard the trees in the front yard look pixelated. Going to be big fun doing chores today!

I am right there with you on the rain. I know we need it, but really? constantly? I really need a few days of actual sun...not just no rain. They have told us the same.."dry tomorrow" for the last couple of weeks and yet it still rains the next day....

Yes I have heard you don't hatch eggs from a frizzle to frizzle breeding because the chicks can have severe feather issues. The broody mama in the pic is frizzled so I won't be hatching any of her eggs that might have been fertilized by your guy. The bio mom is smooth but apparently has the a frizzle gene. because one of the babies has what look to me like week old frizzle feathers.

I think I can still put her with your boy because she is smooth but if anyone can confirm I would appreciate it.

I put sand in my runs and I am noticing a real difference in chicken cleanliness and egg cleanliness. They aren't perfect but look way better...especially the white ones...than they did a year ago.

As the winter solstice is today I wanted to give props to these girls who have been my best winter layers.

Cass...my homebred version of a red star 6-7 dark reddish brown a week from her

And Blanche. Can always count on that HUGE bright white egg from her 5-6 days a week

The rest of my 2014 girls hatched too late in the year to be laying yet...at least that's the story they are telling me. Excited that I will have early hatches this year. I have had to get eggs from a friend for the last 2 months or so.

I posted this right before everyone else got hit hard by the storm (it seemed to have mostly skip here--all we got was a couple rainy and windy days--well, OK, there were a couple of impressive blasts on Thursday, which ended right before I had to take students to lunch, so the timing was nice, but other than that, it was what we expect in December, but haven't gotten the last couple of years) so I can understand why it got buried... If anyone can think of anything else I could link to that article, I'd appreciate it:D

Sorry it took so long to read this but I found it to be a great introduction into the world of chickens. Good Job! :thumbsup

From everything I read on the bantam Cochin thread. The frizzle gene is dominate and breeding 2 frizzles results in a "frazzle", who will have very bad problems with breaking feathers.
