I have several smaller black Pita Pinta mixes that are turning out to be very determined broodies. I'm not sure which of my birds are their mamas but I'm thinking that at least one of them hatched from my lavender Ameraucanas. They are smaller than a regular large fowl bird. I don't have any bantams but my Lav AMs are my smallest birds. One girl just hatched 3 chicks and another one is sitting on several eggs. I'll let you know how they do as mamas. I may have a new broody "breed" that is also a green egg layer! It's funny but I have 2 giant black Langshan with new chicks, 3 more Langshan who are broody, the 2 small black mixes that are broody, and now one of my mamas from last year has decided that broody is in style! Maybe I should just turn off my incubators!

Neal gave me more eggs so maybe not yet.

Thank you. ..............It is amazing how so many pitch in to help. As we often say around here "it takes a village"........... We have made a master list of needed supplies & I will provide the main course (chicken of course). I think when they build a post they will have a sign up area for what all is needed. I have accumulated almost all the furnishings. We may have to ask to borrow a couple of pop up covers for the food area. The 30 foot one I bought last year got broken in the wind. Slowly it will come together. I like RSVPs just so I know how much of the chicken dish I need to make to have for everyone. It is such fun...................a little differently planned this year concerning the health scare but still a lot going on.
  Just keep a watch out for more info................................

I need some large white egg layers.. These white ones are from my buff ducks, the green from my Rouen. My egg basket just got more fun.. Now everybody is laying =) waiting on hatch then gonna fill the bator cause next week every egg will be for our big Easter A~Fair. Even my bantams are pitching in so I'll At least have small and tiny white eggs =)

That is funny! Who needs incubators in the Spring?

Anyway if our Silkies aren't broody we wonder what's wrong with them. Broody is their middle name year 'round. And it's contagious. Within an hour both Silkies will start brooding trying to beat the other one to the favourite nestbox. Flock politics is very competitive and it seems to be a status symbol to be an egg layer or a broody. I just hope my APA Amer doesn't catch the fever. She's been a fantastic egg layer for 2 seasons and I'd hate to stop getting those beautiful blue eggs from her right now.

Jules @fortyfivefarm in Madera may have some nice Andalusians for white eggs. They have been good layers for both of us.

I agree - the Mediterranean class of chickens (Andalusian, Ancona, Legs, Minorca, WFBSpanish, Catalana, etc.) are outstanding for their prolific white egg-laying. I adore Leghorns but sadly had to rehome our two because they became bullies toward the gentle breeds in our mixed flock. But if you have lots of space or isolate the Meds from gentle breeds you can't get more fantastic large-xl size white eggs except from the Meds. There are a lot of fantastic brown egg breeds but the Meds are the best producers of white eggs. We too are now without a white egg in our basket since re-homing our Legs so we ordered a gentle Breda for white eggs. It was a toss-up between the gentles - Polish, Houdan, or Breda - for white eggs and we decided to try a Breda. We won't get the xl prolific white eggs like the Leghorns but at least we will get SOME white eggs without having to deal with the aggressive Mediterranean class of chickens.

Hello all! New here so am a bit lost! I'm in Sacramento area looking for local(ish) breeders of guineas & colored egg layer chickens. Any advice or info? Was looking @ hatcheries, but don't want 25 of either. Thank you
