California - Northern

It's been about a month since our co-op did their chick give away. I was there and helped with unloading 700 chicks and 50 poults.
They were all gone in a week. In less than 4 months they sell over 2;500 chicks, I have no idea how many ducks, geese, guinea, chuckars, turkeys, and pheasant they sell annually.

Oh wow.

Happy Mother's Day all!

I am so bummed though. Today is "lockdown" for the Pita Pinta eggs. I pulled them from the incubator and candled them before moving them to the hatcher. No t one of them is developing.

I could have sworn I candled them about 10 days ago but it must have been another batch I was thinking of. They were in the same incubator s the 17 chicks that just hatched a few days ago so I know it wasn't the incubator. The only thing I can think of is that the PO beat them up. I really think that when they come the whole way by truck it is harder on them than when the go by air. The only other batch I had that happen with was from Jeff in Redding. I am so disappointed. I am going to eggtopsy and see if they just never started or started and quit.

I am sorry to hear that!

I put in 12 last week and 10 are developing here. The next time I go to Redding, I could meet you in Orland and get more to you.

Quote: I opened 2 of them just now. One looks like there was no change (yolk and white still separate) and the other was a scrambled glob slightly thickened. I am assuming the scrambled one started and quit very early and the other never started. I will probably open the rest tomorrow and ill let you know what I find. I have a lot of Mother's Day prep for a BBQ to do today and won't have time. I would appreciate meeting with you for new batch. I may have to go to Sac in the next couple of weeks and could maybe meet then but am not sure if that will happen or not. I will let you know!

These are the 2 I opened

Let me know and I will start collecting for you.

Look for a place in the County zoned for Ag. Usually it is A1 or something similar. I do not think any city will allow Pea fowl. Somewhere over there in that area they do have rules in the County about the number of Cockerels or cock birds you can have--not noise but "sport" related.(We cannot post about that sport here).

Post pictures please!

Thank you so much for the welcome and for the good advice.
The whole zoning thing is tricky, but it does sound safest to stick with Ag land.
I'm not completely attached to Sonoma and Mendocino counties, so any thoughts about other areas are also welcome.
In these counties, I've seen properties that are Rural Residential and Light Agricultural, and I can't figure quite out what is and isn't allowed in these zones...

And thank you also from my boy!

My area is more of light ag. I only have just over an acre so limited to small to medium animals, goats, sheep, poultry, etc fine but no horses or cows. Those nearby with about 1/2 acre can have small animals.
