Quote: The friend I hatch for has the same problems. She brings them filthy and upside-down. Asks if she can bring a dozen for me to set then, brings 3 dozen. Tells me she brought duck eggs an then I get chicks hatching on the turner at 21.... All we can do is try!

Here is a picture of my young birds. We built this temporary roosting area for them at night. Still have a couple I can't ID yet.

I received the report on 2 of the 3 Pita Pinta hens that died 10 days ago. I haven't had time to look up everything and make sense of it all but they were 2 very sick girls. I'm not sure what I can do to prevent this happening to any of the other birds. Maybe someone on here can interpret it for me. Here is a link to the report.

Here is the short version:

Hen A - Pericarditis, mutifocal, nodular, lymphocytic, chronic
- Nephritis, multifocal, interstitial, lymphocytic, chronic
- Peritonitis, lymphoplasmacytic and histiocytic, moderate, multifocal, chronic

Hen B - Oviduct, adenocarcinoma, severe, widespread
- Lungs, metastatic adenocarcinoma, multifocal, early stage
- Salpingitis/yolk peritonitis, moderate, chronic, pleocellular

In the case summary, Davis noted that both hens had a large, cystic, persistent right oviduct. They said that it is unusual to see persistent right oviducts that are this large and theorized that this might be a breed-related characteristic. They did say that there was no evidence of Marek's disease in peripheral nerves and brain. And the test for avian flu was negative.

Good lord! Can't the scientific community speak American? They told you what it wasn't but not what it WAS! I once looked up chicken diseases and it boggled my mind how many chicken diseases there were and how many were so similar as to be indistinguishable in symptoms and many more diseases were without vaccines than had vaccines for prevention. And that so many of the diseases had no tests to even diagnose if it's what the chicken has or not and that only necropsy would say for sure. Well this necropsy report shot that theory to H*** !!! I hope you get a good explanation eventually,

Right after I replied my daughter posted this on her FB pages...

Our California Pines property in Modoc County is around 25 mi south of Oregon bordering national forest way up in the tippy tip corner of Northeast Calif. Back in 1941 that part of California and some of southern Oregon had petitioned to vote to become a separate state as "Jefferson" and that movement collapsed as WWII broke out the next day and there were more important matters to tend to. Even though we live year-round in SoCal I feel comfortable being on this Northern thread too

Quote: The same can be said about human diseases too. Tons of things that can go wrong and not very many with vaccines to prevent them. There is not enough money in studying illness in poultry to be worth them putting much into saving them. I think the only thing they do much with is things that are likely to impact industry. The monetary value is low enough for each individual ( not much time between hatch and slaughter or egg laying life span). More cost effective to slaughter them all and start over.

Quote: The "State of Jefferson" thin is going on again though. Personally...I think they should find one spot where 95% of the people want it, then everyone else who also does can move there with them. I don't think they have a clue what is involved in starting from scratch. (There...I am down off my soapbox now)

I think the report was pretty clear. One chicken had cancer. One chicken had an infection in it body cavity. I think it's great to know why they were sick. It helps you know if you could have helped them it also could help you with future illness in your chickens.

The lymph stuff is from an infection and is not cancer. It does not say cancer. We often call that swollen glands. The lymph system is the main infection defense system.

They both died from an infection. Egg yolk peritonitis is what a lot of us call it.
