I received the report on 2 of the 3 Pita Pinta hens that died 10 days ago. I haven't had time to look up everything and make sense of it all but they were 2 very sick girls. I'm not sure what I can do to prevent this happening to any of the other birds. Maybe someone on here can interpret it for me. Here is a link to the report.

Here is the short version:

Hen A - Pericarditis, mutifocal, nodular, lymphocytic, chronic
- Nephritis, multifocal, interstitial, lymphocytic, chronic
- Peritonitis, lymphoplasmacytic and histiocytic, moderate, multifocal, chronic

Hen B - Oviduct, adenocarcinoma, severe, widespread
- Lungs, metastatic adenocarcinoma, multifocal, early stage
- Salpingitis/yolk peritonitis, moderate, chronic, pleocellular

In the case summary, Davis noted that both hens had a large, cystic, persistent right oviduct. They said that it is unusual to see persistent right oviducts that are this large and theorized that this might be a breed-related characteristic. They did say that there was no evidence of Marek's disease in peripheral nerves and brain. And the test for avian flu was negative.
So sorry Deb...I haven't been keeping up.

I think I remember that using the fipronil top spot was an option for chickens for mites/lice.  AM I remembering correctly?  If so what is the application dose/method?

Works best for lice, so-so for mites. 3 drops on skin for standard sized birds, adjust for size (2 drops for bantams, 4 for turkeys, etc)

Thanks! Does it matter what "size" you get...as in what pet weight size? Not sure of the volume in the tube is just more for bigger dogs or if the concentration is higher in the same volume.

Get the generic fipronil for dogs. Cats is a different formula so the drops would be more.

I did get the one for dogs...but the come in different weights....5-20 lbs,....21-44 lbs, etc. Like I said...not sure if the amount of liquid is the same but is more concentrated for bigger dogs or if there is more liquid at the same concentration...and therefore more drops...
For Dogs, the formula is the same regardless of the size. Cats is weaker for all weights.

It is more economical to buy the big dog size usually though.

generic fipronil caused problems in cats. Not sure why.
But frontline plus has almost identical ingredients, except the cat version has a higher percent of one of the Ingredients.
Never had a problem using frontline plus on cats

So last week I had a young pullet with an impacted crop. She's only 1 of 2 nice blue Am's so I tried to save her.
She couldn't even walk the crop was so heavy. She's 3 months old.
I performed crop surgery and it was quite easy! I used gorilla glue instead of super glue to close things up. Didn't have anything else.
Not sure if regular folks can buy dissolvable sutures but will find out.
I put her on antibiotics
It's been a week and the crop is working well! She was only on chick start for first week with no access to treats or grit. Today she got a little of those.
Her crop was full of feathers at surgery! So may be a protein issue she was lacking .
I was a bit skeptic but so happy she's doing well. Just wanted to share my wonderful experience!

That is amazing! Dr. R. Kern
