that place is way expensive for me, i was thinking $5 a chick not 7-20, and my feed store has 1 week old chicks, should i go with thoes, or wait a week. in one week the feed store may be getting more chicks in, but i plan on giving to a broody hen who has been broody 3 times this year and has been on eggs for 20 days, what should i do?

Yes, way too much for me too.... I'm going to look at Big R next year and really check out what other chicks they get in.... I called them this afternoon and they get their day old chicks from Murray McMurray .... and they were very healthy chicks.... Rae

One thing to remember is that hatchery birds will stop laying eggs sooner and often have other health problems. You can find very nice quality local chickens from breeders--You will have a harder time getting them now though because of the time of year. Breeding has a season with chickens.

If you want something local and nice, get on a list now for next spring.

There are a lot of different breeds that are local. For breeds that are not here, there is a buy sell trade section on this forum.

I was looking at some of the things that @DMRippy has....Very nice....

If she is in good health, I would wait until they get more in. I have had broodies sit for 4 and 5 weeks on nothing and they are fine. IMO the younger the chicks the better.

If you just want good layers get the black sex link. They are awesome.
I bought an oranmental layer assortment from MCMurrays. I am very sorry I did. The chickens are very healthy but I have dogs.
The chickens I got are flyers. They are very lean and long legged. They constantly fly out of the pen. I dont care how much we cut back their wings they are always flying. They dont last long with the dogs. I wish I had just bought the big fat hens.

DH has been asked if he was interested in a position Forestry and Dept. Of Ag. are trying to combine. It would mean moving back to the coast, probably between Brookings and Coos Bay.

I'm sitting here visualizing a mixed flock of Dark Brahmas and Partridge Rocks. DMRippy has the Rocks. DB's may be harder to find.

The move would not be anytime soon, lots of work to do here before we could even list the house. Thankfully he agrees we couldn't live in town anymore.

You can find Dark Brahmas--I have seen them around BYC.

That would be a great place to live! It is very pretty there.

My daughter was convinced she want Andalusians. We could not get them re-homed soon enough! They would fly into the fencing everytime I went to feed them. I always talk to the girls when working outside, those Andy's just never learned!
