Hornbrook is less than an hour South. While living there I thought I would never have chickens, I said that for 40 years!![]()
I'm in Crescent City, so you're 8 miles closer to Oregon than I am. Less than 3 hours from me, too! OR4HMom is about halfway between us--around Medford/Grants Pass.
It is usually sometime after week 17 or so and Australorps do molt like that. Sometimes it is more of seeing feathers on the ground and them looking a lot better.
Australorps at 22 weeks old at this time of the year will likely start laying a week or so later than normal.
Let us know when they start laying!
You should remove the old feathers. They may encourage lice. If you have a composter, they can go into it.Yes, I'm pretty sure that's what mine did... in every corner of the hen house and the run is lots of feathers.... Should I just leave all those features in there or should I try and get them all out? They all look so pretty now, I just love to hold and pet them...the one I pick up everyday is getting used to it... I sorta think she likes it now...![]()

Australorps are very pretty and their feathers are nice and soft. Yes, they will get used to you.
A shop vac would work! Can you please tell me if there is an easy way to get them out? Maybe a shop vac?
