California - Northern

Hello. I live in Antioch, CA and currently have six chickens: BO, EE, RIR, Welsummer, Partridge Rock, and CA Gray. This seems like a good, fairly active group with lots of good information to share so I wanted to introduce myself.

Welcome! How are you liking the CA Gray? I want CA Gray and/or Barred Holland pullets this coming year.

I have a barred Holland pullet I need a boy and a couple more because I want to preserve this really nice breed. I really like my girl and she lays a nice white color. Got my eggs from Parish Farmgirl on FB (Barred Holland breed here)

Thanks for the welcome. My two favorites are Peepers (RIR) and Oomi Zoomi (ca gray) which also happened to be the only two who have decided to start laying despite the fact that they are all at least 30 weeks old... Grumble, grumble, grumble. We had a BA, but she ended up being a he. I would have been happy to keep him, but the neighbors had been patient enough that we decided not to push it. He was gorgeous though and we were very sad to see him go. Luckily we found someone to take him. It's possible he ended up as dinner, but better that than some of the alternatives. Anyways, Peepers is the best chicken ever and is soooooo tolerant of all the crazy shenanigans my kids come up with when they "play" with the chickens. She has even gone to my first graders school for show and tell. Oomi (ca gray) is my chicken and from very early on insisted on perching on me whenever I was around. Even as a chick, she would willingly jump onto my hand and preen. The whole flock comes running whenever they see me though since they know I'm a sucker and will probably find them a treat if I don't already have one in my hands. They're a little spoiled... The Welsummer and partridge rock (Bonky and Brownie) are the most skittish and best able to evade capture by the children. Lion (BO) is a total chicken drama queen and squawks up a storm when they catch her. I think she's a snob. If I can figure out how to add on to my coop and run, I'd like to add another batch in the spring. I'm pretty sure I have an old cooler I can covert into an incubator and then we could try hatching some of our own. I think the boys would love that!
